Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks struggles continued Friday night at Independence Events Center against the Dayton Gems, as the Gems defeated the Mavericks 6-3. The game was the second of three in three nights between the two teams, with the Gems winning the first two contests by a combined score of 10-4. Andrew Courtney shined for the Mavericks in the game, netting two goals and Sebastien Thinel registered his league-leading 19th and 20th assists. The Mavs also broke their franchise record for shots on goal with 51. The previous record stood at 50. The Mavs and Gems wrap up their three-game set tomorrow night at Independence Events Center at 7:05.
The Mavericks outshot the Gems 5-1 in the first four minutes of the game, but to no avail. The Gems capitalized on a two-man advantage late in the period, when Dale Mahovsky was charged with a double-minor for high sticking. Shortly after, Dave Pszenyczny was whistled for roughing. The Gems scored two quick five-on-three goals. Brad Lutes tallied the first power play goal at the 14:47 mark of the opening frame. 32 seconds later, Brandon Naurato netted the second power play goal. Assisting on the goal were Greg Labenski and Matt Baxter. The Mavs were outshot 10-9 by the Gems in the period.
The Mavs were awarded a penalty shot early on in the second period, as Thinel was hauled down on a breakaway. Larry Sterling stood tall though, stopping Thinel on a low blocker side shot. The Gems capitalized on the missed opportunity by the Mavs, getting another goal from Lutes. Assisting on the goal was Damian Surma. Courtney brought the Mavs close with a goal at the 10:14 mark. Thinel and Ed McGrane were credited with the assists on the goal. The momentum was brief for the Mavs, as Surma added his third point of the night, scoring Dayton's fourth goal. Lutes and Matthew Larke assisted on the goal. At the end of the period, Dayton was out to a 4-1 lead.
The Mavs drew closer in the third period, cutting the Gems lead in half on Courtney's second goal of the night. Pszenyczny and Thinel assisted on the goal. Dayton was able to keep the Mavs at arm's length, this time on a goal from Larke. The Mavs persisted, drawing the score within two goals on a shorthanded goal from newly acquired defenseman, Steve Kaunisto. John-Scott Dickson assisted on the goal. Dayton added an empty net goal from Ben Winnett and the Gems skated to the 6-3 victory.
The Mavericks broke their previous franchise record of 50 shots on goal with 51 attempts on Dayton goaltender Larry Sterling. The Mavs were once again scoreless on the power play, going zero-for-four with man-advantages. Dayton went two-for-five on the night.
