HIDALGO, TX - A four-goal first period was the difference on Friday night as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees handed the Arizona Sundogs a 5-3 loss at State Farm Arena.

Arizona made a late run with third period goals from Jeff Hazelwood and Kyle Hood, but it was the second straight win for the Bees over the Sundogs in less than a week. Rio's Dan Gendur led all skaters with four points in his first game back from injury.

Aaron Lee opened up the game's scoring just over a minute into the contest with a shorthanded goal at the front of the net. Hazelwood buried a rebound 5:27 in for Arizona to tie the game at 1-1 before Rio Grande Valley rattled off four unanswered goals, including three more in the opening period.

Tomas Klempa added a pair of goals sandwiched around a power play strike by Gendur with three minutes to play to cap the first period scoring.

In the second period, Brandon Campos extended the Bees lead to 5-1 with a power play goal 43 seconds in. Rio carried that four-goal lead into the third period before Hazelwood's and Hood's tallies to close the gap.

Scott Reid took the loss, but was relieved in the second period for Levente Szuper who stopped 20 of 21 shots. John Murray made 37 saves for second straight game in the win for the Bees.

Both teams had six power play chances. Rio Grande Valley scored twice, while Arizona was blanked on the man-advantage.

The Sundogs and Bees square off again on Saturday at 6:30 PM MST time.
