Kansas City Mavericks News Release
HIDALGO, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees tallied three power play goals and defeated the Missouri Mavericks, 4-3, in overtime Saturday night at Dodge Arena. It was the first time this season the Mavericks needed extra time to determine the winner, however Daymen Rycroft scored his second power play goal in overtime and gave the Killer Bees (5-3-0) their fourth straight victory. Missouri (2-6-1) finished 0-12 on the power play in the game, and continues to struggle with the man-advantage going 0-25 in the last four games.
The Mavericks nine-game road trip to start the season has finally come to an end. Missouri will head home for two games next weekend against the Wichita Thunder at the brand-new Independence Events Center.
"We were much better tonight," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We took a couple bad penalties and our special teams let us down. We outplayed them five-on-five, but the special teams were difference tonight."
Brett Hammond gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead on the team's first shorthanded goal of the season. He took a pass from Nick Sirota and beat Killer Bees' goaltender Wylie Rogers. It proved to be the only goal of the first and Missouri also held the edge in shots through one period at 12-8.
The Killer Bees quickly tied the game in the second period when Jesse Bennefield scored just 28 seconds into the middle frame. It marked the first of three power play goals Rio Grande Valley had in the game. Rycroft scored the first of his two power play goals at 9:35 of the second to give the Bees a 2-1 lead.
Mavericks' forward and leading scorer, Chad Hinz tied the game at two when he took a pass from Jeff Christian and snapped a shot over the shoulder of Rogers. That goal came at the 15:48 mark of the second, but the tie didn't last long as Andrew Schembri scored for the Killer Bees just 24 seconds later. Schembri's goal was the only even-strength goal of the game for the Bees and it gave them a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
Missouri tied the game at three on Bill Vandermeer's third goal of the season. He was assisted by Hinz and Christian and the Mavericks held on for the remainder of regulation to force overtime.
The Mavericks were given a golden opportunity and started the overtime period with 48 seconds remaining on a power play. Missouri was unable to score and Rycroft buried his second goal at the 2:24 mark of the extra session to give the Bees a 4-3 victory.
Missouri again outshot the Killer Bees 35-33. The Mavericks finished the longest road trip of the season 2-6-1 and have at least a point in three of the last four games.
Mavericks' single-game tickets are now on sale at the box office at Independence Events Center. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturday game days. Tickets start at just $12 and are still available for opening weekend. Visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
