Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - On Friday night, the Rapid City Rush topped the Mississippi RiverKings 5-1 in the first meeting of the season between the two teams. The Rush scored two powerplay goals off of just three chances while holding the RiverKings scoreless on the man-advantage despite giving up 10 powerplays.
In the first period, the Rush received outstanding goaltending from rookie goalie Danny Battochio who started the game off with a handful of stops, including two breakaway chances. The offense then rewarded the effort as they got their first powerplay chance of the game near the midway point. After a flurry in front of RiverKings netminder Ray Jean, Brendon Hodge sent home a rebound for the game's first goal. Just over five minutes later, Les Reaney scored a highlight-reel goal as he beat two RiverKings defenseman and squeaked a backhand five-hole to double the lead. With the goal, Reaney extended his goal scoring streak to six games and his point streak to seven games and Brendan Cook lifted his point streak seven. With one minute left in the period, the Rush scored another powerplay tally as Scott Wray banked a shot off the Jean and in to make it a 3-0 game headed into the first intermission.
Mississippi aimed to keep it a contest and Stephen Margeson was up to the task, taking a rolling puck and firing it past Battochio to make it a 3-1 game. The Rush however answered 13:33 mark with the second goal of the game from Reaney while defenseman Luke Fritshaw and Clay Plume assisted on the play.
Rush forward Derek Campbell had missed both of Rapid City's road games due to an upper-body injury, but was able to suit up for Friday's contest. At 9:28 of the third, Campbell was able to net his first point of the season as he banked a shot in to bring the game to a 5-1 final.
The Rush held the edge in final shots, 33-28. More importantly, the Rush went 2-for-3 on the powerplay while holding the RiverKings scoreless on 10 chances. Danny Battochio made 27 saves for his second professional win, while Ray Jean was pulled after Rapid City's fourth goal and Ian Keserich stepped in, allowing one goal on 12 shots.
