Mavs Comeback Falls Short against Steelheads

Kansas City Mavericks News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Kansas City Mavericks (14-8-1-1) dropped their third straight at the hands of the Idaho Steelheads (15-9-1-2) on Saturday night at Centurylink Arena, wrapping up the three-game set between the two teams.
With the Mavericks looking to salvage some points out of a three-game trip to Idaho after dropping the first pair of games in the set, the first period was looking bleak for a while. The Steelheads jumped out to a two-goal advantage with goals from Jeff King and Mitch Moroz, putting the Mavericks in an early hole. Kansas City would come fighting back as Greg Betzold would net his sixth goal of the season to cut the Idaho lead in half. The Mavericks would pick up a long power play after a series of altercations, and Joey Sides beat Steelheads netminder Tomas Sholl for a power play marker, his fourth of the season, to tie the game at two goals a piece.
The second period was highlighted by very physical play by both sides. Idaho would net the only goal of the period when Alexander Dahl beat Mavericks goalie Ben Halford at the 5:08 mark of the middle frame to give the home team a one-goal advantage. That lead would hold through 40 minutes of play.
The Mavericks pressed hard in the third period, throwing everything they had at the Steelheads. With the defense clamping down for Idaho, Kansas City couldn't best Stoll to extend the game. Mavericks goalie Ben Halford made 21 saves, taking the loss. Stoll stopped 30 of 32 Kansas City shots for the 3-2 victory.
Kansas City wraps up their road trip Tuesday night in Wichita with a match-up against the Thunder.
