Mavericks Win Third Straight Game, 4-2 Over Tulsa

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks faced the Tulsa Oilers for the second consecutive night Saturday night at Independence Events Center. The Mavericks posted their highest shot total in franchise history as they defeated Tulsa, 4-2, in front of the Mavericks' second consecutive home sellout. Toby Lafrance, Olivier Filion, Dominic D'Amour and Simon Watson all recorded two points each for the Mavericks who won their third straight game.

The first period began with both teams struggling to mount scoring chances. The Mavs and Oilers traded punch for punch on special teams, as both squads held man advantages three times each in the period. The Mavericks would be the only ones who took advantage though, when Dominic D'Amour rifled home a slap shot on the Mavs final power play chance of the period. Toby Lafrance and Olivier Filion assisted on the goal. The Mavericks' first tally would set the trend for the rest of the evening. Mavericks' goaltender Rob Nolan had 10 saves in the opening frame. Ian Keserich of Tulsa stopped nine of 10 shots.

The middle act proved to be full of action as the Mavs and Oilers racked up the shots and penalty minutes. Cole Ruwe was called for tripping just under four minutes in to the period. Three seconds later, the Oilers tied the game on a power play goal from Derek Eastman. Gary Steffes was credited with an assist on the goal. The teams went on throughout the period without being able to solve the goaltenders, with the Mavericks piling up 17 shots in the period to the Oilers' nine. Simon Watson was finally able to beat Keserich, when rookie forward Walker Wintoneak fed him a pass in the slot and Watson buried the goal. After the goal, Carlyle Lewis and Evan Kotsopoulos got tangled up, causing a fracas in front of the Oilers' net. A total of 12 penalty minutes were handed out for the outburst. Tulsa responded quickly after the Mavs' tally as Chad Costello found the twine just two minutes later. Jack Combs was given an assist on the goal.

The Mavericks' record setting performance would reach its climax in the final 20 minutes. Two minutes into the third period, the Mavericks' "French Connection" hooked up again as Toby Lafrance buried a pass on a play by fellow French-Canadians, Olivier Filion and Dominic D'Amour. Filion and D'Amour were credited with assists. The offensive outpouring continued for the Mavericks, as they racked up an astounding 23 shots in the third period. Simon Watson sealed away the victory for the Mavericks with an empty net goal with 12 seconds left in the game, good for his second goal of the game. The Mavericks set a new franchise high for shots in a game as they racked up 51 total shots over 60 minutes. The former franchise record was 50, ironically enough against Tulsa last season on February 18, 2010. The Mavs 23 third period shots also tied the franchise high for shots in a period.

The Mavericks finished the night one-for-six on the power play, and they have scored a power play goal in 10 of their last 11 games. Tulsa also recorded a power play goal, finishing one-for-five with the man advantage. Four of Toby Lafrance's five goals have come against the Oilers this season. Ian Keserich finished the night with 47 saves on 50 shots. Rob Nolan stopped 22 of Tulsa's 24 shots as well.

The Mavericks return to action next week with four games in five nights including three at home. The Mavs kick off the Thanksgiving week in Bossier-Shreveport, then they host the Bloomington PrairieThunder on Wednesday, November 24 at Independence Events Center at 7:05pm.
