Gems Come From Behind to Earn 2-1 Win

November 20, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release

Fort Wayne, IN- Looking to bounce back after a wild game that resulted in a 6-4 loss in Evansville last night, the Dayton Gems headed into the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum to face-off with the Fort Wayne Komets tonight. Hoping to get back to their winning ways, the Gems were looking to pounce on the Komets early knowing that the Komets entered tonight's game on a four-game losing streak and also knowing they (Fort Wayne) have struggled on their home ice early, only picking up one win in four previous attempts.

It was the Komets who got out of the gate early in the first period however outshooting the Gems 17-7, but Jeff Jakaitis was back in between the pipes and stopped them all including a couple of outstanding saves on a number of deflections in front of his net. The Gems earned two power play opportunities in the period but Komets starter Nick Boucher was matching Jakaitis stop-for-stop and due to the goaltending and strong penalty kills the game was scoreless after the first twenty minutes of play.

The second period was nearly a repeat of how the first period went. For much of the period both teams traded shots on goal and scoring chances and once again the special teams would play a role in how the period developed. The Komets broke the scoreless tie when Bobby Phillips finished off a bang-bang play in front of Jakaitis and got the puck behind him to give Fort Wayne the early 1-0 lead at the 15:06 mark. That would be the only goal of the period, and at that point of the game as the Gems found themselves trailing after two for the second consecutive night heading into the third.

Searching for their first victory of season after trailing by two periods the Gems were determined to find a way to pull out a big road victory and that's exactly what they did. Rookie Erik Boisvert tied the game with his team leading 6th goal of the season at the 8:17 mark on an even strength goal. Then later in the third, Kyle Bochek recorded his second marker of the season (and second game-winner) at the 14:09 mark when he jumped on a rebound and put it in behind Boucher. Jeff Jakaitis and the Gems defense made that one stand and held on for the 2-1 win.

Jakaitis bounced back with authority after taking last night's 6-4 loss by stopping 39 of the Komets 40 shots on goal and the Gems penalty kill did enough as well by discarding four out the five Fort Wayne power plays. With the win, the Gems are now 8-3-1 on the season and improve to an impressive 3-1-0 on the road. The road success will attempt to continue tomorrow night as the Gems venture over to Illinois to take on the Mallards of Quad City at 5:05 ET.
