Allen Americans News Release
ALLEN, Texas- The Allen Americans bid to extend their winning streak to eight games came up short tonight in front of 3,771 at the Allen Event Center. Playing the Odessa Jackalopes for the third time in six days, the Americans were unable to rally from an early three-goal deficit, and fell to the Jackalopes by a score of 5-1.
The Jackalopes capitalized on an Americans turnover and struck first when Kenny Corupe intercepted Iain McPhee's pass and beat Chris Whitley with a backhander 15:23 into the first period. Mike Lesperance would add to the Jackalopes lead 1:53 later with a shorthanded goal after collecting a loose puck on the Americans blue line and firing the puck past Whitley on a breakaway. After 20 minutes of play in Allen, the Jackalopes led 2-0 despite being outshot by the Americans 12-6.
Mike Ramsay's wrist shot through traffic early in the second period extended Odessa's lead to 3-0 before Bruce Graham struck with a power play goal 10:25 into the frame. Graham's goal got the Americans on the board and cut the Jackalopes lead to 3-1. The goal was Graham's ninth of the season.
The remainder of the second period was spent primarily in the Jackalopes zone, but the Americans were unable to cut into the deficit any further as Odessa netminder Joel Martin continuously turned shot after shot aside.
The third period would see more of the same from Martin, who denied all 12 shots he faced in the frame. Odessa ended any hope of an Americans comeback with a pair of empty net goals from Jeff Pierce and Todd Robinson with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
With the 5-1 loss the Americans now fall to 13-3-0, but still remain atop the Central Hockey League with 26 points. Allen will now travel to Arizona for three straight matchups with the Sundogs, beginning on Wednesday night at 8:05 PM.
Mully's Musings: "I can't fault our effort or energy tonight. I thought we had good possession in the offensive zone outside of the five-on-three chances."
"I don't want to lose sight of the fact that we are 13-3, and we have worked hard to get there. At the end of the day we worked hard, but made some mistakes."
"We're looking forward to the road trip, we've been good on the road. We are going to take our days here and recover, and refocus. It's been a really good month for us, and I have a lot of respect, even tonight for our energy level and effort out there."
