Kansas City Mavericks News Release
MOLINE, Illinois - The Missouri Mavericks won their second straight game Friday night, 5-4, over the Quad City Mallards in a shootout at i wireless Center. Ryan Jardine scored the game-winning goal in the shootout and forward Sebastien Thinel led all scorers with three points in the game on a goal and two assists. Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger stopped 50 of 54 shots in his seventh win of the season, and Missouri will travel home for a game Saturday night at Independence Events Center against the Allen Americans at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are still available and fans are encouraged to bring new teddy bears for the Mavericks' annual Teddy Bear Toss.
The Mavericks took advantage of two penalties on the Mallards and scored a pair of power play goals early into the first period. First, Dale Mahovsky lit the lamp at the 4:36 mark on a five-on-three power play goal. He was assisted by Thinel and Ed McGrane, and then Brandon Coccimiglio scored on the ensuing five-on-four power play goal. The Mallards bounced back when Brandon Marino netted a chance at the 12:17 mark to cut the Mavericks lead to 2-1.
Missouri regained the two-goal lead just one minute after Marino's goal when McGrane tallied his sixth goal of the season. McGrane was assisted by Andrew Courtney and Thinel, but the Mallards again made it a one-goal game before the end of the first period. John Snowden took a feed from Darren McMillan and beat Effinger for a power play goal. After one period, the Mavericks held a 3-2 lead, but it was the Mallards who had the edge in shots at 21-10.
Effinger was the story in the second period as he stopped all 18 of the Mallards shots. The Mavericks were shorthanded a total of three times in the period, but the penalty kill stood tall and kept the Mallards off the scoreboard.
The Mavericks held on to the 3-2 lead until the 14:41 mark of the third period when Bob Preece ripped a slap shot past Effinger to tie the game at 3-3. Missouri again bounced back and took the lead when Zach Carriveau made a nice backdoor pass to Thinel who buried it past Mallards' goaltender David McKee. The Mallards did not go quietly as they tied the game again with just 1:55 to go in regulation. Jeremy Boyer scored on assists from Obi Aduba and Taylor Vichorek, and the goal sent the game into overtime and eventually a shootout.
In the shootout, Effinger stopped three of six shots and four Mavericks' players scored including Jardine's game winner.
The Mavericks will return home for a game Saturday night against the Allen Americans at Independence Events Center. The game is the Mavericks' annual Teddy Bear Toss and fans are encouraged to bring new teddy bears to throw on the ice after the Mavericks' first goal.
