Missouri Outlasts Mallards in Shootout

December 9, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. (December 9, 2011) -Charlie Effinger made 50 saves and Ryan Jardine converted the deciding penalty shot as the Missouri Mavericks claimed a wild 5-4 shootout win over the host Quad City Mallards Friday night. The Mallards, who twice tied the game late in the third period after spending most of the evening battling from behind, did earn one point for their efforts.

Jardine ended the contest by burying the sixth Missouri penalty shot to snap a 3-3 shootout deadlock. Jardine's clincher came on the heels of successful penalty shots from teammates Dale Mahovsky, Sebastien Thinel- who produced a goal and two assists in regulation- and John Scott Dickson. Shootout goals from Jared Brown, Jake Riddle and John Snowden were not enough for the Mallards.

The contest only went to overtime and- eventually- the shootout after a roller coaster finish to regulation. The Mavericks emerged from the first period on top 3-2 and nursed that advantage deep into the third-until Bob Preece's blast evened the score at three at 14:41. The Mallards were soon brought up short, however, when Thinel tipped in the tie breaker at the 16:38 mark. Undaunted, the Mallards responded with a second, even later equalizer from Jeremy Boyer- on a rebound- with just less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

The Mavericks finished the first period on top despite being outshot by the Mallards 21-10 in the opening 20 minutes. Missouri took the initiative early by scoring back-to-back power play goals. The Mavericks were up 5-on-3 when Dale Mahovsky jammed in the opening goal from point-blank range. Just 34 seconds later Brandon Coccimiglio's 5-on-4 goal stretched the gap to 2-0.

Brandon Marino got the Mallards on the scoreboard for the first time by burying a rebound at 12:17 of the first. However, the Mavericks would reestablish a two-goal lead exactly one minute later with a close range goal from Ed McGrane.

The Mallards again narrowed the gap to a single goal when John Snowden drove a power play goal home from the high slot at 16:18.

The Mallards, who visit the Dayton Gems tomorrow night, next play on home ice next Saturday night, December 17, at 7:05 p.m. against the Mavericks.
