Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Tulsa Oilers ended the Missouri Mavericks three-game winning streak with a 4-3 win in overtime Saturday night at BOK Center. Derek Hulak and Gary Steffes each had three points for the Oilers (8-12-1) who beat the Mavericks for the first time in four tries this season. Missouri fell to 10-6-3, but remains in a tie for second place in the Turner Conference with the Dayton Gems. Walker Wintoneak, Derek Pallardy and Carlyle Lewis scored goals for Missouri who will not play again until a pair of home games next weekend at Independence Events Center.
"We focused on getting three out of four points on this road trip and we did that," said Mavericks' coach Scott Hillman. "We battled well to come from behind a couple times, and Lewy (Carlyle Lewis) scored a big goal for us. We didn't take care of the 10-foot radius (around the goaltender), and all of their goals were rebounds, so that is something we will work on this week."
Walker Wintoneak gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead exactly two minutes into the opening period. His line mate Toby Lafrance chased the puck down along the right wing just before he reached the goal line. Lafrance put the puck on net and Wintoneak was there to put in the rebound.
The Oilers tied the game on Derek Hulak's first of two goals at the 12:44 mark of the first period. Gary Steffes slapped a shot from the point and Hulak backhanded the rebound to tie the game. Tulsa took the lead in the final minute of the first period on their first of two power play goals in the game. Derek Eastman scored on an assist from Harrison Reed to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead after one period.
The Mavericks tied the game in the second period on Derek Pallardy's fifth goal of the season at the 14:11 mark. Missouri was on a three-on-one break and Pallardy took a pass from Wintoneak and beat Oilers' goaltender Ian Keserich glove side. The Oilers again scored a power play goal in the final minute of the period to take the lead. This time it was Hulak for his second of the game with just 50 seconds remaining in the period.
Missouri trailed 3-2 heading into the third period, but the team again battled back and tied the game on Carlyle Lewis' third goal of the season. Lewis ripped a shot from the top of the left circle that went through traffic and tied the game at the 15:17 mark of the final period. Lewis has scored his three goals in the past four games for the Mavericks.
The teams headed to overtime and Steffes scored the game winner just 1:26 into the extra session. He took a pass from Hulak who corralled a rebound behind the net, passed it back to Steffes and he stuffed the puck in for the win.
Missouri finished 0-for-3 on the power play and the Oilers scored two of their four goals with the man-advantage going 2-for-6.
The Mavericks three-game win streak came to an end but the team is still riding a four-game point streak with the overtime loss at 3-0-1.
