Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- Matt Summers scored a natural hat trick and goaltender Alexander Pechurskiy stopped all 27 shots in a 5-0 Mississippi RiverKings Central Hockey League victory over the Wichita Thunder on Saturday, December 4th in Southaven.
Summers' three consecutive goals helped the RiverKings to a 4-0 lead sandwiched around goals from Patrik Levesque and R.G. Flath. Pechurskiy posted his first professional goaltender shutout by stopping 27 Wichita shots on goal.
Mississippi took the lead in the first period on Levesque's sixth goal of the season and fifth since coming in a trade to the RiverKings. Levesque scored on a feed from R.G. Flath and Nathan Lutz at 1:33 for a 1-0 lead, which the RiverKings took into the locker room after twenty minutes of play.
Summers then took the stage for the next three goals, starting with a power play goal at 12:23 of the second period for a 2-0 lead. Number two for Summers was nearly two minutes later at 14:13 on a feed from Levesque for a 3-0 advantage. Summers completed his three-goal natural hat trick at 12:26 of the third period, followed by Flath's marker with 3:25 remaining for the final score.
Pechurskiy improved to 5-3-0 for the season with his first pro shutout, while Wichita goaltender Peter Delmas dropped to 0-2-1 with 18 saves along with the five goals scored.
Mississippi was 1-for-4 on the power play and stopped all seven Wichita power play chances. The RiverKings won despite being outshot 27-23 for the game.
With the victory, the RiverKings improved to 10-10-1 for the season, while Wichita dropped to 9-8-2. The RiverKings will next face the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Friday night, and then host the Dayton Gems on Saturday at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, beginning at 7:05 PM.
Saturday is "Teddy Bear Toss" night and fans are encouraged to come with stuffed teddy bears and stuffed animals. When the first RiverKings goal is scored, fans will throw their stuffed animals and bears onto the ice. Those items will be collected and donated to the U.S. Marine Corps' "Toys for Tots" program.
