Rapid City Rush News Release

Rapid City, SD - On Friday, the Rapid City Rush faced off against the Quad City Mallards for the first time ever. The game remained close the entire night as the Rush scored with just 8 seconds left to send the game into overtime. However, the Rush were unable to find the deciding goal in OT, and the Mallards came away with a 5-4 victory.

The Mallards lit the lamp early scoring just 5:06 into the first period. With two Rush skaters in the box, the 5-on-3 powerplay goal was scored by Quad City's defenseman Shane Lovdahl, marking his first of the season. The Rush answered the call only 1:15 later when Gio Flamminio sent a wrist shot home through a screen, also earning his first of the season.

The Rush got things started quickly in the 2nd period, earning their first lead of the game just 2:24 into the frame. The tally was picked up by Ryan Menei who collected his team leading 13th of the season. With 11:46 left in the period, Quad City's Brandon Marino was set up by defensemen Darren McMillan to tie up the score at 2-2. Wasting no time at all, the Rush took back the lead when Derek LeBlanc hammered home a Les Reaney pass just 2:22 later. The Mallards however, fought back just over a minute later with Tyler Shelast's 5th of the season, also marking Quad City's second powerplay goal of the game.

The 3rd period remained tied up and scoreless until the last minute of the regulation. Quad City's Shane Lovdahl struck for his second powerplay goal of the game with just 59 seconds left in regulation. With the extra attacker out for one final push, Brendon Hodge snapped a 15-game goalless drought at the perfect time, rifling a slapshot to the top-right corner with just eight seconds left. Hodge sent the game into overtime after tying the score at 4-4.

Despite outshooting the Mallards 30-17 over the last three periods, including a 7-2 edge in overtime, the game headed to a shootout. Vladimir Hartinger was the lone Rush shooter to convert in the shootout, while Brandon Marino, Zac Pearson and Phil Axtell all scored to secure a 5-4 Quad City victory.

The two teams square off again tomorrow at 7:05PM in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Tickets are still available for the game.
