Mavericks Shoot Down Mallards for Sixth Straight Win
February 18, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks thrilled a sold out crowd at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena with a 2-1 win over Quad City on Saturday night. The win was the Mavericks' sixth straight and improved their record to 24-19-7 on the season.
The Mavericks and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum celebrated their salute to the 1942 Kansas City Monarchs' Negro League World Series championship tonight. A stirring pregame ceremony that included a standing ovation for the Mavericks' guest of honor, Willie O'Ree, energized Missouri, and the home side responded with the first two goals of the game.
Dane Fox extended his goal streak to three games with an unassisted strike 4:57 into the game. The puck appeared to have been played with a high stick by a Mavericks forward. No one touched the puck along the left-wing wall until Fox scooped it up and beat Quad City's C.J. Motte with a backhander. Andrew Courtney doubled the lead with his eighth goal of the season at 12:10 of the first.
Josh Robinson started in goal for the Mavericks and turned aside each of the 11 shots he faced in the first.
In the second period, Robinson appeared to catch a stick under his mask and had to leave the game for medical attention. Stephon Williams, who was reassigned to Missouri from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League on Thursday, took over with 8:04 left to play in the second. Quad City welcomed Williams with a goal out of a scramble at the side of the net. Michael Parks chipped in his 21st of the season at 13:15 to pull the Mallards within one.
Robinson returned to the crease for the start of the third period and picked up where he left off. In a tightly played frame, Robinson stopped each of the eight shots he saw over the final 20 minutes to backstop the victory. The Mavericks tested Motte with seven shots of their own in the period but were unable to pad the lead any further.
Robinson's win was his ninth of the season and came in a 23-save effort. Williams, in reliefe, turned away two of three shots in just over eight minutes of work. The Mavericks ended the night 0-for-3 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendar! The Mavericks are back in action on home ice on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 4:05 p.m. to face the Toledo Walleye! The Mavericks will host their annual Wedding on Ice presented by Kennedy's Jewelers. Sunday also features the Family 4 Pack ticket deal.
