Mavericks Hold off Mallards
February 18, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks (24-19-7) got first period goals from Dane Fox and Andrew Courtney and then held off the Quad City Mallards (29-20-2) the rest of the way to claim a 2-1 victory Saturday night.
The Mavericks opened the scoring just under five minutes into the game. After Missouri's Dan Correale played the puck with a high stick at the Mallard blue line, Fox appeared to be the next player to touch the puck in the left wing circle but the whistle did not sound and Fox skated into the slot to fire a backhander home. At 12:10 of the first, Andrew Courtney charged down the right wing to snap in the second Maverick goal.
The Mallards' Michael Parks cut the gap to 2-1 by pouncing on a rebound at 13:15 of the second period. Parks scored against Stephon Williams, who had entered the game just over a minute earlier in place of Missouri starting goaltender Josh Robinson after Robinson suffered an injury.
Robinson then returned to the game in the third period and stopped all eight Mallard shots over the final 20 minutes. The Mallards pressured but could generate an equalizer even after pulling goaltender C.J. Motte (20 saves) for an extra attacker late in the contest.
The Mallards return to action on the road next Wednesday night against the Fort Wayne Komets. The Mallards next play at home next Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Kalamazoo Wings. The first 1,000 fans through the doors for that game will receive free Mallards drink koozies courtesy of Local 4 News. Friday is also another $2 Dog/$2 Beer Night presented by 97X. Fans can enjoy $2 hot dogs and beers from iWireless Center concession stands during every Friday Mallards home game. In addition, the Mallards have once again this season partnered with Metro to provide transit service between Augustana College and downtown Moline during all Friday home games. As part of Metro's unlimited ride program, Augustana riders can use their Augustana ID as their fare.
