Jackals Drop First of Two against Reading

READING, PENN. - The Reading Royals (30-17-1-2) scored three goals in the second period and used that surge to down the Elmira Jackals (9-34-6-1), 4-1, at Santander Arena Saturday night.
On Pink in the Rink Night in Reading, the first period was a tight one, but neither team could find a lead with goalies Andy Iles and Martin Ouellette shutting the door in the opening period. The Jackals outshot the Royals 10-9 in the opening 20 minutes and both teams were unsuccessful on a power play.
The Royals broke the ice in the critical second period on a loose puck goal by Nathan Moon at 3:24 of the period. The Jackals responded to tie the game a few minutes later. Kenton Miller took a pass behind the Reading net, used his body to protect the puck and came out in front. He spun a hard backhand shot which beat Ouellette to tie the game 1-1 at 6:30 of the middle stanza.
The Royals came back to quickly reclaim the lead at 8:55. Reading won an offensive zone faceoff at the left circle and Derik Johnson sent a shot towards the net from the blue line. The puck appeared to tip off someone in front and past Iles to give the Royals a 2-1 lead, with Johnson getting credit for the goal. A few minutes later, the Royals converted on the power play with Robbie Czarnik burying a puck off a crease scramble to give Reading a 3-1 lead at 11:25. That lead would carry into the third period.
Elmira opened the third period with a flurry of chances, but the Jackals couldn't convert to get within one. Reading pulled away late with Matt Willows scoring on a partial breakaway at 14:58 to give the Royals a 4-1 lead, which would hold as the final score.
