Kansas City Mavericks News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - The Missouri Mavericks battled back from a 3-0 deficit after the first period to stay within one goal of the Fort Wayne Komets on the road Saturday night, but were ultimately overwhelmed 6-4 by the efforts of right wing Shawn Szydlowski, who scored a total of five goals (three short-handed) against the visiting Mavericks.
The Mavericks were aggressive off the first face-off in Fort Wayne, but the Komets were first to strike at 11:46 of the opening period when Shawn Szydlowski scored his twenty-seventh of the season with the help of Mike Embach and Eric Faille. The Komets then took a strong stand through the remainder of the frame with two special teams goals, first a power-play tally at 15:30 via Christian Ouellet (assisted by Matt Lowry and James Martin), and then with a stinging short-handed goal at 17:47 from Szydlowski, his second mark of the night, for a 3-0 lead over the visiting Mavericks. Faille had the lone assist on Szydlowski's twenty-eighth goal of the season.
The Mavs opened the second period with a quick tally from leading goal-scorer, Andrew Courtney, only forty-one seconds into the frame. Team Captain, Sebastien Thinel, was credited with the lone assist on Courtney's twenty-seventh goal of the season.
Geoff Walker doubled the Mavericks' efforts at 17:36 of the second period, unassisted, to bring the Mavs within one goal of the Comets, 3-2.
The third period was a back and forth battle as the Mavs fought to stay within a goal of the Komets. Szydlowski scored his second short-handed goal of the night only thirty-nine seconds into the third period. Missouri answered back with a tally from forward Tyler Currier at 12:33, assisted by Thinel and Courtney. Szydlowski then notched his third short-handed goal of the night at 14:57, assisted by Faille, rebutted by Courtney's second tally of the evening at 17:18 on the power play with Lindsay Sparks taking the assist credit.
Missouri looked to pressure the match into an overtime decision in the final minutes of regulation by pulling net minder Josh Robinson from between the pipes in favor of an extra attacker, but Szydlowski expanded his run over the Mavs with his fifth tally of the night, taking an empty-net goal at 18:42 for a 6-4 Komets scoreboard.
The Missouri Mavericks play their next two games on the road before returning home to Independence Events Center on Saturday, Mar. 28 at 7:05p.m. when they host the Wichita Thunder for Fan Appreciation Night. The Mavs will be auctioning off the warm-up jerseys they have worn before every home game during the 2014-15 season directly after the game in Sections 101 and 102.
Single game tickets are available for purchase online at TicketMaster.com and in-person at the Silverstein Eye Centers Box Office at Independence Events Center.
