Wheeling Nailers News Release

ELMIRA, NY- The two-game weekend between the Wheeling Nailers and Elmira Jackals was highlighted by defense and goaltending. After the Nailers prevailed 2-1 in a shootout on Friday, the Jackals came back with a 2-1 regulation win on Saturday. Travis Fullerton stood tall in goal with 35 saves, while his teammates picked up one goal each in the first and second periods. Zack Torquato extended his point streak to 11 games, assisting on Chaz Johnson's third period goal for Wheeling.

After combining to make 69 saves on Friday night, the goaltenders announced their presences in the first period. It took until the final minute of the first period for the scoreless deadlock to be broken, and that tally was notched by the Jackals, who capitalized on a turnover. Kevin Hart broke up a pass at his own blueline, springing Trevor Gerling in on a breakaway. Gerling took the puck from his forehand to his backhand, slipping a shot through Franky Palazzese's legs.

One goal was also scored in the second period, and unfortunately, that was also done by host Elmira. Nick Tuzzolino spun a pass through center ice, leading Taylor Stefishen in on the left side of the offensive zone. Stefishen separated himself from the defense, before taking a shot from the left circle, which found its way into the right side of the cage.

The Nailers attempted to rally back in the third period, and with 1:51 remaining, they pulled within a goal, while playing on the man advantage. Zack Torquato was the extra skater on the right side of the ice, which he used to his advantage, zipping a pass through the slot to Chaz Johnson, who drilled home his second goal in as many nights. Unfortunately, Wheeling was unable to climb back with an equalizer, as the game ended 2-1 in favor of the home team.

Travis Fullerton backstopped the win for Elmira, blocking away 35 of the 36 shots he faced. Franky Palazzese played well, but was on the wrong side of the equation for Wheeling, after stopping 28 of the 30 shots directed his way.

The Nailers will start a four-game homestand on Wednesday at 7:05 against the Toledo Walleye.

The next homestand will take place with four games in five days from March 25th-29th. NASCAR Night on March 28th will be the highlight game of the week, as the Nailers will wear special jerseys as part of CORE Weekend, while a NASCAR race car will be at the game. March 29th will be the final Family Funday and Post Game Skate, while March 27th is a Flat Screen Friday, Frosty Friday, and Player Poster Giveaway.
