Kansas City Mavericks News Release
HIDALGO, Texas -The Missouri Mavericks dominated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Friday night, 10-5, at State Farm Arena. Forward Brandon Coccimiglio had the Mavericks' third hat-trick of the season, and Mike Berry and Todd Griffith each had two goals in the win. Missouri's 10 goals marked the second most goals in a game in team history and the most goals scored in a road game all-time. The Mavericks are now 37-22-6 and will travel to Laredo for their final game of the regular season Saturday night at Laredo Entertainment Center.
"I'm proud of the guys from coming back from deficits four times," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "They showed a lot of resilience, and we are building confidence as we head into the playoffs."
The high-scoring affair started just 1:49 into the first period on a goal by Killer Bees' forward Aaron Lee, but the Mavericks answered on Coccimiglio's first of the game. Rio Grande Valley took one-goal leads up until their fourth goal, but the Mavericks answered every time. After one period, the teams were tied 3-3 and Coccimiglio had two of his three goals.
Lee again started the scoring in the second on a power play goal to give the Bees a 4-3 lead, but it was the final lead of the game for Rio Grande Valley. The Mavericks scored four straight goals in the second period to take a 7-4 lead. At one point, Missouri had seven goals on 14 shots.
Griffith scored his second goal of the game at the 6:26 mark of the second period to tie the game at four, and Simon Watson, Cole Ruwe and Nathan O'Nabigon all scored goals to give the Mavericks the 7-4 lead. Darcy Campbell scored for the Bees' with one second remaining in the period to cut Missouri's lead to 7-5 after two periods.
It was all Mavericks in the third period as Berry scored back-to-back goals giving Missouri a 9-5 lead. Finally, at the 14:01 mark of the third, Coccimiglio completed his hat trick on the Mavericks only power play goal of the game.
Missouri outshot the Killer Bees 31-29 in the game and scored on nearly one-third of their shots. The 10 goals scored by the Mavericks marked the most in a road game in franchise history and the second most all-time. The 15 total goals also tied a Mavericks' team record.
Missouri wraps up the 2010-11 regular season Saturday night against the Laredo Bucks at 7:30 p.m. The Mavericks will host their first two playoff games on Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2.
