Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. - Chris Lipsett scored once and added an assist, Matt Larke provided what proved to be the game winning goal and Derek MacIntyre made 35 saves as the host Dayton Gems defeated the Quad City Mallards 3-2 Friday night.

Larke gave Dayton what was, at the time, a 3-1 lead when his drive from the right wing circle caromed off Mallard goaltender Adam Russo's mask and the crossbar before carrying into the net at 17:48 of the second period.

The Mallards, who spent most of the evening battling from behind, cut the margin to 3-2 on Mike McLean's wrist shot from the right wing circle at 13:04 of the third period, but were unable to produce a late equalizer.

Quad City first fell behind when Dayton's Tysen Dowzak opened the scoring with a slap shot from the blue line at 5:21 of the first period.

Lipsett stretched the Gems' lead to 2-0 by tipping the puck home from the doorstep at 4:26 of the second period.

Just 57 seconds later, the Mallards pulled back within one while on the power play when Obi Aduba fired the puck into a gaping net from the left wing circle, but Larke's goal later in the second would prove too much for the Mallards to overcome.

The Mallards played without left wing Joe Blaznek Friday night after Blaznek was granted Central Hockey League leave due to a family bereavement. Blaznek is expected to miss the Mallards' regular season finale tomorrow night in Dayton before returning to the team. In Blaznek's stead, Drew Akins was activated from CHL leave and returned to the Mallards' lineup this evening.

After concluding the regular season tomorrow night, the Mallards will face an opponent to be determined on dates to be determined in the opening round of the Central Hockey League's Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Playoffs.
