Martin's five shutout innings earn him first win as starter

Ethan Martin (2-0) pitched five shutout innings on Sunday as the Fightin Phils (69-51) defeated the Trenton Thunder (62-58) 2-0. He earned his first win as a starter since August 19th of 2013 when he pitched for the Phillies against the Colorado Rockies.

Michael Pineda made a rehab start on Sunday for the Trenton Thunder. Scheduling to pitch just three innings, he ran into trouble in the top of the third inning against the Fightin Phils. Harold Martinez singled with one out then moved to second base on a groundout by Brian Pointer. Martinez stole third base then scored on a throwing error by catcher Eddy Rodriguez that gave Reading a 1-0 lead.

The Fightin Phils weren't done there as Nick Williams hit a triple in the following at-bat. JP Crawford brought him home with a RBI triple that gave Reading a 2-0 lead. Ethan Martin threw five shutout innings in his first start since July 21st at Bowie. He gave up two hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Hoby Milner entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Milner logged 1 2/3 innings and gave up one hit. Jimmy Cordero came in to the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. He got Dante Bichette Jr. to fly out to center field to end the inning. Cordero gave up one hit and one walk with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings in relief of Milner.

Stephen Shackleford entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning to close out the contest. He issued just one walk and clinched his 28th save. Andrew Knapp extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the top of the eighth inning.

The Fightin Phils begin a seven-game home stand on Monday night as they welcome in the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
