
Marrero Named Eastern League Player of the Week

Portland, Maine - The Eastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs has selected Portland Sea Dogs shortstop Deven Marrero as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of June 16th through June 22nd.
Marrero appeared in six games and hit .650 (13-for-20) with a triple, a home run, four RBI, and six runs scored. Marrero had at least one hit and drove in or scored at least one run in all six games he played in last week and had multiple hits in four of those games, including three three-hit performances. He led all Eastern League players in batting average (.650), on-base percentage (.652), slugging percentage (.900) and OPS (1.552) and tied for first in hits (13) last week. The Florida native extended his on-base streak to 19 straight games, the longest current streak in the league.
On the season, Marrero is hitting .292 (70-for-240) with 18 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 35 runs scored, and 36 RBI. He has tallied 12 stolen bases in 18 attempts, walked 30 times and struck out 53. Also a defensive standout, the shortstop is leading his counterparts in the league with a .975 fielding percentage, committing six errors in 241 total chances. Marrero was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the first round (24th overall) in the 2012 draft.
Marrero joins Mookie Betts as the only other Portland Sea Dogs' player to win Eastern League Player of the Week honors in 2014. Additionally, Sea Dogs' pitchers Henry Owens, Mike McCarthy, and Brian Johnson have all earned Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors this season.
The Sea Dogs begin a three game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at Hadlock Field in Portland on Monday night. The team will then embark on an eight-game road trip, complete with a four-game stop in Reading, and a four-game stop in Trenton. Tickets are available for all Sea Dogs home games.
