Monday, June 23, 2014 - Game #76 - Home Game #40

NYSEG Stadium - Binghamton, NY - 6:35 PM

LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets had their five-game winning streak halted in a 2-0 loss to the Bowie Baysox at Prince George's Stadium on Sunday. Bowie starter Zach Davies gave up a leadoff double to start the game, but retried 18 of the next 20 batters he faced in seven innings of shutout ball. Matt Bowman took the hard-luck loss. The Maryland native allowed just two runs in seven innings. Kyle Johnson and Brian Burgamy each tallied double.

BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Rainy Lara takes the hill for the tenth start of the season and his first since May 28. Lara suffered a left ankle sprain that day against New Hampshire when he came down on home plate awkwardly while trying to prevent a run to score. Binghamton lost the game 5-2. Lara has allowed three runs or less in seven of his nine starts this season, including two performances with seven strikeouts. The Bani, Dominican Republic native was signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent on October 31, 2009.

READING STARTER: LHP Jesse Biddle is making his fifteenth start of the season and first against Binghamton. The Philadelphia native hasn't won a game since May 4. He is 0-5, but has only given up more than three earned runs once during that stretch. That includes tossing seven innings of three-run ball in a 4-3 loss to the Akron RubberDucks in his last outing on Wednesday, June 18. Biddle is in his second year with the Fightin Phils. He was the 27th overall pick by Philadelphia out of Germantown Friends High School in the 2010 draft.

THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: Binghamton's loss on Sunday ends a run of ten games in twelve chances in which the offense has tallied at lease five runs. That includes four games where the team crossed the plate at least ten times. The season-low three hits ends a stretch of four straight games with 11 or more base knocks. It was just fifth time the B-Mets were shutout this season and the first since May 30.

IT'S ABOUT TIME: Monday's game is the first matchup of the season between Reading and Binghamton. The division rivals are set to meet six times this season. The two squads will also match up in Reading from August 15-17. The only other team the B-Mets haven't seen in 2014 is the Trenton Thunder.

KYLE'S KILLIN' IT: With leadoff double on Sunday, B-Mets OF Kyle Johnson extended his hitting streak to five games, He his 5-for-18 during that stretch with three doubles, three RBI, and two runs during the streak. This comes after a four-game hitless steak in which he went 0-for-10.

A CASE OF THE MONDAY'S: The B-Mets are just 4-6 at the beginning of the work week in 2014. That's worse than any other day. The only other day the team is below .500 is Tuesdays. Binghamton is a combined 35-22 in the other five days of the week.

WHAT A RELIEF: The B-Mets bullpen has been one of the bright spots for this team during it's recent hot streak. The unit has allowed just four runs in the last 17.2 frames with two walks and 11 strikeouts. The group is 14-7 with 3.30 ERA and has given up about twenty fewer hits than inning pitched.

BOWMAN KEEPS ROLLING: Despite taking the loss on the Sunday, Matt Bowman continued his consistent performance on the mound. The starter has allowed three runs or fewer in five of his last six starts. He's taken the game into the seventh inning three times, but is just 2-3 during that stretch.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Binghamton continues their homestand with Reading on Tuesday at NYSEG Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM in a game that features RHP Greg Peavey taking the hill for Binghamton. Reading counters with RHP Severino Gonzalez.
