
Eastern League Weekly Award Winners Announced for June

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of June 16th through June 22nd:
Portland Sea Dogs shortstop Deven Marrero has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of June 16th-June 22nd. The 23-year old batted .650 (13-for-20) with one triple, one home run, six runs scored, four RBI, one stolen base, two walks and a .900 slugging percentage in six games for the Sea Dogs last week. Marrero, who is a native of Miami, Florida, had at least one hit and drove in or scored at least one run in all six games he played in last week and had multiple hits in four of those games, including three three-hit performances. The 6'1", 195 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in batting average (.500), on-base percentage (.652), slugging percentage (.900) and OPS (1.552) and tied for first in hits (13) last week He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in triples (1-tied 2nd), total bases (18-3rd) and runs scored (6-tied 5th). With his performance last week he raised his batting average by almost 30 points and he is now hitting .292 in 61 games this season. Deven, who entered the season rated by MLB.com as the 11th best prospect in the Red Sox organization, was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 24th overall pick in the first round of the 2012 draft after he was named First Team All-Pac-12 as a junior at Arizona State University.
Zach Davies, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Bowie Baysox, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 16th-June 22nd. The 6'0", 150 lb. hurler started two games for the Baysox last week and had a record of 2-0 with seven strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Davies, who is a native of Chandler, Arizona, made his first start of the week on Monday night at Trenton and gave up two hits while striking out three batters and walking two over six shutout innings in Bowie's 3-2 victory. In his second start of the week Davies fired seven shutout innings for the Baysox in a 2-0 victory over the visiting Binghamton Mets on Sunday afternoon. He gave up just one hit, a leadoff double to start the game, and finished with four strikeouts and two walks while improving his record to 3-4 and lowering his ERA to 4.24 on the season. The 21-year old tied for the league lead in wins (2) and ERA (0.00) last week and also ranked among the leaders in innings pitched (13.0-tied 2nd), batting average against (.075-3rd) and WHIP (0.54-6th). Zach, who entered the season rated by MLB.com as the 12th best prospect in the Orioles organization, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 26th round of the 2011 draft out of Mesquite High School in Gilbert, Arizona.
