New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
TRENTON, N.J. - Jonathan Jones homered and Matt Newman tripled in the ninth, but the Fisher Cats (31-44) left the tying run ninety feet away in a 3-2 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs (50-26) on Monday night.
The Fisher Cats were down 3-1 entering the final inning when Jones laced his first homer of the season off the video board in left field. The one-out blast was his first in 165 at-bats this season, and it pulled the Fisher Cats within a run in the series opener with Portland.
The ninth continued when Newman blasted his third hit of the game high off the wall in right, missing a home run by inches. He settled for his second triple of the season, but was stranded at third when Derrick Chung and Kevin Nolan both grounded out to third to end the game.
Newman finished the game 3-4, falling a home run shy of the cycle. He doubled home the Fisher Cats first run in the second inning, plating Jones with a wall-scraper to left field. Jones finished the game 2-3, scoring both Fisher Cats runs. Nolan added three hits of his own, including a double in the third.
After Newman put the Fisher Cats ahead in the second, Portland tied the game on a Sean Coyle home run to lead off the bottom of the inning. A two-out RBI from Heiker Meneses gave the Sea Dogs the lead later in the inning, 2-1.
Austin Bibens-Dirkx (L; 2-2) took the loss, lasting just two innings while pitching on short rest. Richard Bleier allowed a lead-off homer in the third put push Portland ahead, 3-1, but the lefty settled down to pitch five innings without allowing another run.
Luis Diaz (W; 2-0) earned the win in his second Double-A start. He went a career-high eight innings allowing just one run. Miguel Celestino (S; 7) allowed Jones' homer in the ninth, but held on for the save.
The series continues at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night. Lefty Daniel Norris (0-0, 6.35) will make his second start for the Fisher Cats against Portland righty Mike McCarthy (6-2, 3.77). Radio coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Thursday night to start a five-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats. The homestand includes two fireworks shows, a Friday night doubleheader, and a Sunday hat giveaway.
