Curve Snap 'Cats Franchise-Best Win Streak with One-Run Victory

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - A fourth inning two-run homer by Willy Garcia was enough for the Curve to snap New Britain's franchise-best 11-game winning streak in a, 4-3, win on Monday night at New Britain Stadium. Zack Dodson (2-3) tossed his second straight quality start to earn his second win of the 2014 season. After not winning any one-run games on the road in 2014, the Curve have now won two straight.

Dodson had early run support on Monday thanks to a pair of runs in the first inning. Junior Sosa singled to start the game and that was followed by a Drew Maggi single to put two on. Both runners moved up on Justin Howard's fly out and then Elias Diaz hit a sac fly to score Sosa. After four batters, the Curve had the lead, 1-0. Matt Curry followed Diaz's sac fly with a single back through the middle that scored Maggi from second and it was a two-run lead.

New Britain scored single runs in the second and third off Dodson to tie it but then the Curve un-tied it thanks to the Garcia home run in the fourth.

That is all that the Curve needed on Monday as Dodson pitched through the sixth to earn a quality start. He had a huge double play in the fifth with the bases loaded and one out. After a visit from Stan Kyles, Dodson's very next pitch was rolled to short by Reynaldo Rodriguez for the inning-ending double play.

In Dodson's six innings he allowed two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one.

Emmanuel de Leon took over and pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth before Jhonathan Ramos was tasked to start the ninth. With one away, major league rehabber Aaron Hicks doubled and then scored on a Eddie Rosario double to cut the Curve lead to one. Ryan Beckman was summoned out of the bullpen and grabbed the final two outs for his fourth save of the season.

Altoona had multi-hit games from Jarek Cunningham, Maggi and Sosa. Curry led the team with three hits including a triple.

Winners of two straight, the Curve (28-47) aim to take the series from New Britain (39-33) in the middle game at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday night from New Britain Stadium. RHP Pat Ludwig (0-1, 4.50) makes his second start of the road trip when he takes the mound versus Rock Cats' LHP Pat Dean (5-2, 4.48) on Tuesday.
