Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO - Avoiding overtime the Kalamazoo Wings received a goal from Alex Mallet (3rd) with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to defeat the Elmira Jackals 3-2 Friday night at Wings Stadium.
Despite dominating the action in the first period, the K-Wings found themselves trailing after the opening 20 minutes. Scoring on their first shot on the night, Elmira's Taylor Stefishen (3rd) lifted a wrister from the slot 6:55 into the period. Out shooting Elmira 8-0 before Sefishen's goal, the K-Wings outshot the Jackals 19-7 in the period.
Showing no ill effect from an early second period disallowed goal from Dane Fox, the K-Wings responded with a pair of goals. Jeremie Blain (1st) evened the game 14:58 into the middle frame with a slap shot from the center of the blue line.
Taking the lead three minutes later, Nathan Longpre (2nd) pushed in a Curtis Valk rebound. The assist extended Valk's point streak to eight games.
Battling back in the third period the Jackals tied the game at 2-2 midway in the period with a wraparound marker from Steven Shamanski (2nd).
In the waning moments Mallet was able to extend his point streak to four games, while getting the crowd of 3,551 on their feet. Falling backwards, Mallet recorded the game-winner off of a Sacha Guimond rebound. The assist from Guimond capped off a three-assist performance by the defenseman.
Kalamazoo finished the night by posting a season-high 46 shots on net. Joel Martin (4-1-1-0) made 23 saves in the victory, while Sam Marotta (1-1-0-0) turned aside 43 saves in the loss.
