DULUTH, Ga. - A Forsyth County Sheriff's deputy hailed for preventing a mass-shooting at the Forsyth Co. courthouse this past June will be recognized as the "Hometown Hero" during Saturday's Gladiators home game against the Florida Everblades at 7:05 p.m.

Deputy Daniel Rush accepted the Deputy Sheriff of the Year Award for Valor - the highest honor awarded by the Georgia Sheriffs' Association - given each year to recognize a deputy who demonstrated an act of "conspicuous heroism and bravery in the line of duty."

Rush was shot in the leg by a heavily armed 48-year-old Cumming man who was attempting to shoot his way into the courthouse on June 6th. Rush was on patrol outside of the courthouse when the man pulled up. Rush approached and engaged the shooter, who fired at him through the window of his sport utility vehicle. A bullet shattered the leg of Rush, a 24-year veteran of the force, breaking it. He underwent surgery to repair the damage and his recovery is ongoing.

The special recognition ceremony will be conducted immediately at the start of the first intermission of Saturday night's game, which is also Military Appreciation Night at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.
