Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Baysox first baseman Joe Mahoney recorded four hits, including a three-run home run, as Bowie topped the Binghamton Mets 7-4 Saturday night in Binghamton. The Baysox put runners on base every inning, racking up 14 hits and drawing five walks. Left fielder Kyle Hudson also recorded three hits in the contest and six different Baysox scored in the game. With the victory, the Baysox improve to 39-40 on the season.
Bowie took a lead in the top of the first inning as the first three batters of the game reached safely. Center fielder Xavier Avery led off with an infield single to shortstop. Second baseman Greg Miclat followed with a single to left field and Mahoney loaded the bases with another infield single to shortstop. Catcher Steve Lerud plated Avery with a sacrifice fly and Miclat and Mahoney advanced to second and third base on a balk with designated hitter Robbie Widlansky batting. Widlansky popped out and third baseman Brandon Waring grounded out to end the inning with the Baysox leading 1-0.
Binghamton answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Jordany Valdespin hit a one-out single to left field but was erased in a fielder's choice off the bat of Joshua Satin. With two outs and Satin on first base, Allan Dykstra lifted an RBI double to left field, tying the game at 1-1.
The Baysox took the lead again with another run in the top of the fourth inning. Shortstop Pedro Florimon hit a one out single to center field and stole second base with right fielder Ronnie Welty batting. After Welty struck out, Hudson hit another infield single to shortstop, but Binghamton shortstop Jose Coronado threw the ball away on the play as Florimon scored and Hudson advanced to second base. Avery drew a walk to put runners on the corners with Baysox up 2-1, before Miclat flew out to end the inning.
Mahoney helped put the game out of reach as the Baysox scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Facing Binghamton reliever Erik Turgeon, Hudson bunted for a single with one out, Avery singled to right field and Miclat was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Turgeon unleashed a wild pitch, scoring Hudson and putting runners on second and third for Mahoney, and the first baseman launched a long home run to right field. Lerud struck out and Widlansky lined out to end the inning with the Baysox leading by five. Waring added a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning, putting Bowie in front 7-1.
While the offense was cruising, Baysox starter Tim Bascom was dispatching the Mets with relative ease. After allowing the run on two hits in the first inning, Bascom kept the Mets off the board for the next six frames, exiting after allowing one run on five hits and no walks in seven innings while striking out seven. It was his longest outing of the season for Bowie, as he improved to 4-2 on the season.
Right-hander Armando Gabino relieved Bascom to the open the bottom of the eighth inning and allowed a run on a sacrifice by Salomon Manriquez. Gabino also surrendered a two-run home to Valdespin in the bottom of the ninth inning before closing out the contest.
Widlansky went 0-for-5 Saturday night, snapping his hitting streak at eight games.
The teams meet again Sunday night at 6:35 p.m. to complete the four-game set. LHP Rick Zagone ( 2-6, 4.71) takes the mound for Bowie against Mets LHP Robert Carson (2-7, 4.25).
