Senators sweep twin-bill

New Britain Rock Cats News Release


The Rock Cats played a twin-bill with Harrisburg at New Britain Stadium tonight. In Game 1, the visiting Senators had their way 11-3. In that first game, the 'Cats' Deibinson Romero belted his 3rd HR of the week - and 5th overall,while Brian Dozier had 2 more Hits for New Britain.

In Game 2 - in front of the 14th home Sellout crowd of the year - the Rock Cats started well, taking a quick 2-0 lead. The Senators responded, however, and went on to win the nightcap, 9-3.

(Game 2) NEW BRITAIN, CT - Harrisburg's Bill Rhinehart, Tyler Moore and Archie Gilbert all homered to power the Senators to a 9-3 victory over the Rock Cats in the nightcap of Saturday night's doubleheader.

The Rock Cats took an early lead when Yangervis Solarte lined a one-out single into left and scored on Evan Bigley's double to center field. Bigley moved to third on a throwing error by center fielder Chris Rahl and scored on Chris Parmelee's sacrifice fly for the 2-0 lead.

Harrisburg answered back in the next inning. Rock Cats starter Blake Martin walked Gilbert but picked him off on an attempted steal only to walk the next batter, Adam Fox. Devin Ivany singled before Stephen King drew a walk to load the bases. A throwing error by third baseman Deibinson Romero allowed Fox to score from third to tie the game and Josh Johnson to reach first safely.

The Senators jumped out in front in the third on a three-run homer by Rhinehart. Moore crushed a solo home run in the top of the fifth. Rhinehart scored on a Gilbert double for another run in the inning to extend the Senators' lead, 6-2.

Gilbert added a two-run home run in the seventh inning to blow open the game for the Senators.

Former New York Mets pitcher Oliver Perez, who signed a minor league deal with the Nationals in the off-season, started for the Senators. He limited the Rock Cats to two earned runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four. Carlos Martinez (1-2) picked up the win in relief.

Martin (1-2), who was making his second spot start of the season, allowed four runs on three hits and three walks in three innings.
