South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals, announced today that goaltender Daren Machesney has been named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for January 16-22.
Machesney, 25, was 2-0-0 with one shutout, a 0.50 goals-against average and a save percentage of .981 in two appearances last week as the Stingrays extended their season-long winning streak to nine games. The London, Ontario, native stopped 23 shots in a 3-1 win against Greenville on Friday and stopped all 30 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over Florida on Sunday.
Machesney is 8-9-0 in 17 appearances this season. He ranks sixth in the league with a 2.39 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. The 6-foot, 185-pound netminder has appeared in 54 career ECHL games with South Carolina, Victoria, Elmira and Reading while also seeing action in 112 career games with Hershey, Manitoba and Worcester of the American Hockey League.
A fifth-round selection (143rd overall) by the Washington Capitals in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Machesney played two seasons of junior hockey with the Brampton Battalion from 2004-06, and was selected to the Ontario Hockey League's All-Rookie Team following the 2004-05 season.
The Stingrays return to action Friday, January 27 against the Trenton Titans at 7:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum. The ZOOperstars, hockey's #1 entertainment act, will be performing during the first and second intermissions!
