Pietrus Named ECHL Player of the Week
January 24, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira Jackals forward Jordan Pietrus is the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for Jan. 16 - 22, the league announced on Tuesday.
Pietrus, a second-year pro, scored three goals, added three assists and posted a +4 rating as Elmira swept its two games this past weekend to improve to an Eastern Conference-best 26-12-1-0 on the season. On Friday, Pietrus registered a goal and an assist and was +1 as Elmira defeated the Trenton Titans at First Arena, 4-3. The 26-year old put together his most productive game as a pro on Saturday, combining for a career-high four points with two goals and two assists as the Jackals powered their way past the Wheeling Nailers in Johnstown, Pa., 7-4. Pietrus was +3 in the contest.
In 26 games since being signed by the Jackals on Nov. 18, Pietrus has collected 18 points (6g-12a) and is +6.
Pietrus skated his entire rookie season of 2010-2011 with the South Carolina Stingrays, scoring five goals and adding nine assists for 14 points in 63 contests. The Vermilion, Alberta native began the 2011-2012 campaign with Trenton, scoring one goal in six games.
Prior to playing professionally, Pietrus skated four seasons at Brown University (NCAA, D-I), scoring 18 goals and garnering 23 assists for 41 points in 100 games from 2006 to 2010. He served as a captain of Brown in his senior season.
Pietrus is noted for his work off the ice. He was a nominee for the 2010 Hockey Humanitarian Award and is a member of Hockey Players for Kids (HP4K), a nonprofit organization made up of hockey players from around the world who devote their time to making a positive impact in their communities.
This award is the first for Pietrus in his professional career. Pietrus is the ninth Jackal to earn the ECHL Player of the Week title since the club joined the league in 2007 and is the second this month, as rookie forward Dustin Gazley secured it for the week of Jan. 2 - 8.
On behalf of Pietrus, a case of pucks will be donated to an Elmira youth hockey organization by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-2001, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 25,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
