Lynx power way past Gladiators with two shorthanded goals
January 9, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
In the first period, Augusta struck quickly, taking advantage of a Gladiators turnover for a shorthanded goal. Louis Goulet moved into the corner to pick up a loose puck and feed it into the slot to Treavor Peterson for his first goal of the year at 2:00 of the opening frame, with Todd Bennett also adding an assist on the goal to give Augusta the lead.
In the second period, Gwinnett would respond to tie the game at 1-1. Jim Jackson took advantage of a scramble in front of the Augusta goal, beating a sprawling Matus Kostur from the right wing at 3:24 with help from Kris Goodjohn and Chris Durno for the only goal of the period.
Third period action dawned with the Lynx regaining the lead on a Sean Connolly goal, set up by Eric Johansson's crisp cross-ice pass to Connolly's tape, after which he fired the puck just under the crossbar to beat Simon Lajeunesse. Brian Passmore also assisted on the goal at 4:09 of the third period. With Gwinnett back on the power play in the third period, Augusta would score their second shorthanded goal of the game when Jamie Johnson took a Matt Dzieduszycki feed from the corner after Dzieduszycki stripped the puck from a Gladiator player in the corner and found Johnson waiting to beat Lajeunesse for a 3-1 lead. But Gwinnett, as they have all year, made the game interesting with just 24.4 seconds left as Dave McCullough found the net from the point on a clean draw win from Mike Stathopolous. With the score 3-2 and their goaltender on the bench, Gwinnett pressed the puck into Augusta territory but could not score the equalizer, giving the Lynx the win.
Stopping 38 shots for the win, Matus Kostur put in his best performance to date for the Lynx. Meanwhile, Lajeunesse stopped 18 shots before coming out after the third Lynx goal due to an injury. Sean Fields turned aside all eight shots faced and did not record a decision.
With their two shorthanded goals in the contest, Augusta is now tied for the league lead in that category.
The Lynx are back in action tomorrow afternoon against the Louisiana IceGators starting at 4:05 pm, with the pre-game show kicking off one half-hour before game time on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
