Underhill And Sea Wolves Shutout Wildcatters 1-0
January 9, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
BEAUMONT, Texas â Matt Underhill made 31 saves to earn his second shutout of the season and extend Mississippi's road unbeaten streak in regulation to eight games dating back to December 11, by blanking the Texas Wildcatters 1-0 at Ford Arena.
The Sea Wolves have reeled off four straight wins overall.
"Our guys kept it simple and Underhill made some big saves," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "It was a good effort by everyone all the way around. We did what we wanted to do in Texas and that was to leave town with a win. I hope we can continue to play the same at home against Louisiana on Thursday."
A big body check highlighted a scoreless first period. Sea Wolves' Russ Guzior threw a hip check on the Wildcatters captain Brian Stacey at the Texas blue line and sent him flying.
Mississippi (16-12-3, 35 points) struck on the power-play at 19:45 of the second period. Jeff Hutchins, who was selected as the Sea Wolves only representative for the 2005 Coors Light ECHL All-Star Game on January 26, tallied his team-leading 17th goal of the season and extended his point streak to eight games beating Texas goaltender Phil Osaer. Assists went to Jay Legault and Louis Dumont, who extended his point streak to eight games.
Sea Wolves' Underhill was perfect through 40 minutes stopping all 20 shots taken by Texas. Mississippi had the upperhand in the shot department 27-20 after two periods.
Underhill got shaken up midway through the third. Wildcatters' Grant McNeill was hooked by the Sea Wolves' Nicolas Corbeil and crashed into Underhill, bowling over the Mississippi goaltender, who would tough it out and stay in the game.
Texas (6-17-7, 19 points) pulled Osaer with 1:27 remaining in regulation in favor of an extra attacker but Mississippi held on for the victory.
Mississippi converted on 1-of-6 power play chances, while Texas went 0-for-4. Sea Wolves outshot the Wildcatters 36-31.
The Sea Wolves return home for their next game at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday playing host to the Louisiana IceGators at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
