Lynx power past IceGators with five man-advantage markers
January 9, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
The week ended with a bang for the Augusta Lynx on Sunday as they scored five power play goals to defeat the Louisiana IceGators 6-4 at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.
Scoring kicked off in the first period when Matt Dzieduszycki registered the only even strength goal of the game for Augusta at 5:15 from Jamie Johnson and Sean Connolly. Eric Johansson followed with the team's first power play goal from Dzieduszycki and Louis Goulet at 10:04 to make it 2-0. Augusta extended their lead on Todd Bennett's first of the night at 12:49 from Goulet and Ken Magowan before Josh Barker responded for the IceGators at 18:32, a power play marker that made it a 3-1 game after 20 minutes of play.
Second period action saw the Lynx continue their domination on the power play, with Magowan scoring on his own rebound just 1:26 into the stanza from Johansson and Bennett. Roger Leonard would also score on the power play for Louisiana to make it a 4-2 game, but back came the Lynx courtesy of Bennett's second goal of the night at 9:11 from Magowan and Johansson. Jim Shepherd would conclude the goal scoring bonanza for the Lynx with a man advantage marker at 12:55 from Jamie Johnson and Rod Sarich for a 6-2 advantage at the intermission.
In the third, John Evangelista's goal at 14:19 seemed to give the IceGators some spark, followed by a late Mark Rooneem goal at 19:07 to pull within 6-4. But the game would never draw closer, with Augusta earning their first win over Louisiana this season. The Lynx finished the game 5-for-9 on the power play, and Matus Kostur made 35 saves to earn his second consecutive win. Nathan Marsters stopped 32 shots in the loss.
The Lynx will be back in action on Tuesday night against the Pee Dee Pride at 7:05 pm, then head to the road to face the Checkers in Charlotte. Augusta will round out the week with back to back home games against Columbia on Friday and South Carolina on Saturday.
