Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads shutout the Long Beach Ice Dogs 5-0 Saturday night at the Bank of America Centre before 4,738 fans. For the first time in this three-game series Idaho struck first, exacting revenge tonight after losing by its largest margin of defeat this season Friday night (2-7).
Steelheads ECHL all-star goaltender Frank Doyle got a little help from his friends as he recorded his third shutout on the season and improved his record to 13-6-1. Long Beach's all-star netminder Chris Madden saw his record fall to 13-3-0.
The Steelheads made its second power play of the first period count. Matt Elich fed defenseman David Cornacchia who was just inside the blue line. Cornacchia's slap shot beat Madden at 15:55. Next, Idaho's Marty Flichel took a shot at Long Beach's net at an awkward angle. Madden got a glove on it, but it couldn't hold on and it deflected off the cross bar and into the net. At the end of the first period, Idaho had outshot Long Beach 13-4, and led 2-0.
Good defense and goaltending by both teams resulted in no scoring in the second frame. Idaho had a two-man advantage for :52 at 8:06, but to no avail. By the end of two, the Steelheads were outshooting the Ice Dogs 25-13.
Early in the third period, the Ice Dogs applied pressure around the Steelheads net and Doyle got caught no man's land. Just as an Ice Dog was winding up to take a shot at the empty net, defenseman Dan Vandermeer threw his body down to make a save on what would have certainly been a goal. Then, in almost a repeat play, Doyle was again out of position to stop an expected shot, but instead the Long Beach player passed it and Hay went down to make the save and blocked the puck with his chest. As an Idaho power play had just expired, Flichel shot from the left circle and Bobby Russell deflected it over Madden's right shoulder. Idaho's third tally came at 8:50. Frank Lukes on a breakway skated in and deked out Madden, beating him with a backhander. Cornacchia wrapped up the scoring with a goal at 15:45, assisted by Brett Draney and Jonathan Zion, who picked up his third helper of the game.
