Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The beginning of 2005 has been a nightmare for the Victoria Salmon Kings. It looked like the line-up would be bolstered with the return of Mike Josephson and Jason Hegberg, Dale Purinton was on his way back from suspension and the team had a shot at making a run for the post season.
Instead the Salmon Kings lose three to the Long Beach Ice Dogs and two to the Alaska Aces at home. Salmon Kings Captain Brad Dexter left Friday's game in Anchorage, with a shoulder injury. On Saturday the Salmon Kings started the game without forwards David Neale and Ryan Watson and defensemen Dexter, Corey Smith and Aaron Plumb.
The first period immediately soured for the Salmon Kings. At 2:37 Chris Minard scored a shorthanded goal assisted by Scott Gomez and Mike Jones. With the Salmon Kings shorthanded, Chris Minard added salt to the wound with a powerplay marker and the Aces were up two before five minutes into the first.
At 10:29 of the first, Chris Minard wrapped up the natural hat-trick on the power-play. Another goal assisted by Gomez and the Aces never looked back. Minard made history for the Alaska franchise finishing the night with five goals. Aces forward Chris Heisten had two and Ryan Moren added a single to the totals. Gomez finished with five assists for the second time in the four game stretch against Victoria.
The Salmon Kings dominated the play for much of the second period. Down five nothing, Salmon Kings winger Blue Bennefield scored his seventh of the season. Once again the Salmon Kings worked the Aces defenders down low but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities in front of Lance Mayes.
Victoria's Rob Voltera added his twelfth goal of the season with under a minute to play. The Salmon Kings out shot the Aces 26-24 but they lost their seventh straight in Anchorage Saturday, 8-2. They will return home for one day before heading to Southern California until January 18th when they host the Long Beach Ice Dogs at the Bear Mountain Arena.
