San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â Sylvain Deschatelets scored twice, including the game-winner 3:37 into overtime, leading the San Diego Gulls to a 4-3 win over the Fresno Falcons Saturday night, before 6,207 at the Sports Arena.
Deschatelets, who also scored in the second period, notched the game-winning marker after his slap shot from the right wing circle trickled through the pads of Fresno goaltender Brett Jaeger.
Curtis Brown also netted a pair for San Diego, while Max Birbraer chipped in with two assists. Netminder Eddy Ferhi rebounded from Friday's tough loss nicely, turning aside 38 of 41 shots.
The win breaks a five-game winless streak for the Gulls (16-11-4) and keeps them eight points back of the first-place Bakersfield Condors. Even with the overtime loss, Fresno (16-13-4) gains a point and extends its unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1).
After scoring nine goals in Friday night's win over the Gulls, it took the Falcons only 45 seconds to get on the scoreboard Saturday, as Derek Krestanovich notched his 13th of the season. Shaun Sutter took the puck away from San Diego's Brian Gornick along the left wing boards and fed it over to Jason Weaver, who quickly dished it to a wide-open Krestanovich. The rookie centerman then, while falling to the ice, shoved the puck past Ferhi.
Deschatelets solved Jaeger 3:55 into the second period with a power-play marker. After taking a pass from Andrew Canzanello, Mark Pederson whipped it to Deschatelets, who wristed home his seventh tally of the year.
Fresno quickly responded at 6:04 of the second on Dan Tessier's team-leading 15th goal. Tessier, who recorded a hat trick in Friday's win, skated in two-on-one, but wouldn't need his teammate as he beat Ferhi on his own with a wicked wrist shot from the left circle.
Brown re-tied it with a short-handed goal 57 seconds into the third period. With Canzanello serving a hooking penalty, Brown and Max Birbraer rushed down the ice on a two-on-one. Birbraer skated past the left circle and dished a pass to Brown, who one-timed it behind Jaeger for his first goal of the night.
The NHL veteran came calling again minutes later, notching his second of the night and fourth of the season at 5:45. Birbraer did the work for the second straight time, wrapping around the net and centering a pass to Brown right on the doorstep. Brown took Birbraer's pass, kicked the puck to his forehand and jammed it past Jaeger, giving the Gulls a 3-2 lead.
That was short-lived however, as Weaver scored the equalizer with a power-play goal at the 8:51 mark. Weaver, rushing down the left wing, took a pass from Tessier and rifled a slapper past Ferhi for his eighth marker.
Nothing could be settled in the rest of regulation and the game headed to overtime. In the extra fame, the Gulls failed on a two-man advantage, which lasted for 1:31. But just as their power play expired, Deschatelets notched the clinching goal.
Notes: San Diego was outscored 26-15 during its five-game winless streak, which was a season high... The Gulls still had six regulars out of the lineup, which included four defensemen: Nikita Korovkin (bruised spleen), Evgueni Nourislamov (sprained knee), Sean Murphy (broken thumb), Jonathon Shockey (separated shoulder), Trevor Koenig (sore elbow) and Guillaume Fournier (concussion-like symptoms)... Canzanello, named Thursday to the ECHL All-Star team, was activated from the injured list... Sean O'Connor was selected Friday as the ECHL Player of the Month for December... The Gulls and Falcons have combined for 42 goals in five games this season (SDG: 24, FRE: 18)...
The Gulls will play in Las Vegas Thursday at 7:05 p.m. and then in Long Beach Friday at 7:30 p.m. before coming home to face the Louisiana IceGators Saturday, Jan. 15. It will be a 7:05 p.m. start and the first 6,000 fans in attendance will receive a special pair of Gulls boxer shorts, courtesy of Coast-to-Coast Tax Service.
