Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The LumberKings scored in the bottom of the tenth inning to earn their first walk-off victory of the season. Clinton evened the series with a 7-6 win in extra innings over the Kane County Cougars on Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field.
The LumberKings opened up a 3-0 lead early on. Tyler Marlette doubled and stole third base in the second inning, and Gaby Guerrero drove home Marlette on a sacrifice fly to start the scoring. In the third inning, Clinton built on the lead with a two-run single from Dario Pizzano.
Kane County used the long ball to erase the 3-0 deficit. Jeimer Candelario belted a solo home run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to two runs. After Clinton starter Victor Sanchez departed, the Cougars rallied in the sixth inning off Richard White. The first four batters reached in the sixth on two walks and two singles. With the bases loaded, Rock Shoulders launched his eighth home run of the season. The grand slam gave Kane County a 6-3 lead.
Suddenly trailing by three, the LumberKings responded right away with their own home run. In the bottom of the sixth, Janelfry Zorrilla hit his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to tie the game at 6-6.
The deadlock continued into extra innings. Brock Hebert and Dario Pizzano drew walks to lead off the tenth inning. After a fielder's choice from Guillermo Pimentel, Patrick Kivlehan stepped to the plate with the winning run at third base. Kivlehan struck a bouncer up the middle past a diving attempt by David Bote at shortstop. The single scored Hebert to give the LumberKings a 7-6 walk-off victory.
Victor Sanchez pitched well in a no-decision for Clinton. The right-hander allowed just one run on three hits in his five innings. Jochi Ogando impressed in his home debut, working 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Grady Wood picked up his first win of the season, pitching the ninth and tenth innings without surrendering a run or hit. Lendy Castillo dropped to 0-3 on the year for Kane County.
The LumberKings and Cougars will play the rubber match of their three-game series on Monday afternoon. The LumberKings send left-hander Tyler Pike (1-3, 3.33) to the mound against Kane County right-hander Pierce Johnson (1-2, 3.77). First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 PM CT.
