Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Fort Wayne's Rodney Daal belted two home runs and collected four hits to lead the TinCaps to a 13-7 win over the Dayton Dragons on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field. The TinCaps extended their winning streak to five straight games with the victory and improved to 21-13 on the year. The Dragons fell to 12-23.
Daal went 4 for 4 and reached base five times, connecting on home runs in the third and ninth innings to go along with a single and double. Teammate Luis Tejada also had a home run and drove in three runs.
Fort Wayne led 2-0 after three innings when they scored six unearned runs in the fourth, taking advantage of two Dragons errors, to jump ahead 8-0. They added two more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 10-0.
The Dragons made things interesting by scoring one run in the bottom of the sixth and five more in the seventh to cut the deficit to 10-6. Tanner Rahier drove in a run with a hit in the sixth and then in the seventh, Jesse Winker's RBI single followed by a two-run double from Seth Mejias-Brean got the Dragons back within striking distance.
But Fort Wayne scored two more runs in the eighth to build their lead to 12-6, and after Winker's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth made it 12-7, Daal added a solo homer in the ninth for Fort Wayne to close out the scoring.
The Dragons collected nine hits in the game. Winker was 3 for 5 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Jeff Gelalich and Beau Amaral each had two hits. Mejias-Brean and Rahier each drove in two runs.
Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano (3-2) worked the first three and two-thirds innings and suffered the loss, victimized by a bad defensive inning from the Dragons in the fourth. Romano allowed six hits and eight runs (only two earned) with two walks and two strikeouts. Tony Amezcua replaced Romano and worked four and one-third innings, allowing five hits and four runs with one walk and six strikeouts. Ben Klimish pitched the ninth, allowing three hits and a run with two strikeouts.
The Dragons host the TinCaps on Monday night at Fifth Third Field in the wrap-up to the three-game series at 7:00 p.m. Robert Stephenson (2-3, 4.76) will start for Dayton against Fort Wayne's Walker Weickel (0-1, 4.03). All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
Notes: Robert Ramirez's eight game hitting streak and Zach Vincej's seven-gamer both came an end. Both players went 0 for 4 with a walk...Amaral extended his hitting streak to five straight games...The 13 runs scored by Fort Wayne matched the season high for a Dragons opponent.
