Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Eight unearned runs led the visiting Great Lakes Loons (13-22) to a 10-0 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (11-22) at Cooley Law School Stadium on Sunday, snapping the Loons' losing streak at nine games.
Lansing's four errors - two by right fielder Carlos Ramirez and one each by shortstop Emilio Guerrero and third baseman Gustavo Pierre - tied a season high.
Lugnuts starter Ben White (Loss, 0-3) lasted 4.1 innings, allowing nine runs to the Loons, but due to three early errors, seven of those runs were unearned. White struck out four and allowed a walk.
A five-run third inning by Great Lakes was the big blow for the Lugs, as four straight run-scoring hits came with two outs, pushing the Loons ahead 6-0 at the time.
After Great Lakes plated another unearned run in the fourth, the only earned runs allowed by White came in the fifth frame with a two-run home run off the bat of Pat Stover.
On the mound for the Loons, starter Jonathan Martinez (Win, 1-2) pitched five scoreless frames before giving way to four scoreless innings by Miguel Sulbaran. Martinez allowed three hits, walking two and striking out one. Sulbaran allowed just one hit, a Gustavo Pierre single, with two strikeouts and one walk.
The Lugnuts received quality relief from Kramer Champlin, who allowed an unearned run on two hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Tucker Donahue pitched a scoreless ninth for Lansing, recording a pair of strikeouts.
In the losing cause for the Lugs' offense, Guerrero reached base in all three plate appearances, drawing a pair of walks and lining a single.
The series rubber match is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Monday night. Lansing will send southpaw Daniel Norris (0-3, 10.07) to the mound, opposed by Loons right-hander Ralston Cash (2-1, 3.64).
