Chiefs/Bandits Split Saturday DH

Davenport, IA- The Peoria Chiefs won game one of the doubleheader 6-3 Saturday over the Quad Cities River Bandits but dropped a protested game two 3-2 on a walk-off single in the seventh inning. The double header featured a triple play, manager ejection, a multi-homer game, a game-tying home run with the Chiefs down to their final strike and a protest by the Quad Cities Manager Omar Lopez.

In game one the Chiefs jumped out to an early lead against Dan Minor. With two outs in the top of the second Michael Swinson singled and scored on a double by Charlie Tilson. Casey Rasmus singled home Tilson for a 2-0 Chiefs lead. Peoria doubled the lead an inning later. Alex Mejia doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Wilson. Jordan Walton put the Chiefs on top 4-0 with his first professional home run, a solo shot to center field.

Leading 4-1, Rasmus doubled home Swinson in the fourth inning and the River Bandits answered with a run off Tyrell Jenkins in the bottom of the inning. Walton homered again in the fifth off Michael Dimock, his second of the game and second of his career. With the Chiefs on top 6-3 in the top of the seventh, Dimock fired at the head of Walton but missed. When Dimock was not ejected, Chiefs manager Dann Bilardello got ejected by the home plate umpire for arguing. Both benches were warned but the game ended without a further incident.

Jenkins (2-2) allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits over five innings in his second straight win. The reigning MWL Pitcher of the Week struck out three and walked five. Corey Baker earned his first save of the season with two perfect innings and five strikeouts.

The Chiefs started game two on a great note with a run in the top of the first against supplemental first round pick Lance McCullers Jr. Valera led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Mejia. A balk moved Valera to third and the Chiefs made it 1-0 with a single by Wilson.

The Chiefs left two on base in the second inning and Quad Cities tied the game against newcomer Silfredo Garcia. A groundout with two on by Ariel Ovando plated Terrell Joyce to tie the game 1-1.

Quad Cities loaded the bases in the third when Garcia hit Joyce. After a meeting on the mound the River Bandits manager argued repeatedly for Garcia to be removed from the game. It was unclear whether he thought the Chiefs coaches and walked off the mound and made a second visit or if he expected an ejection for a hit batter. Either way he put the game under protest as signaled to the press box by home play umpire Ryan Simmons. Garcia struck out the next batter to keep the game tied after three innings.

Peoria got a leadoff double from Tilson in the fourth but again left a runner in scoring position. Dixon Llorens took over on the mound in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff single and a wild pitch, he called for the Athletic Trainer and left the game with an unknown injury. Joe Scanio took over mid-at-bat and walked Ovando to put two on with on outs. Roberto Pena attempted to sacrifice and bunted a line drive toward the mound. Scanio snagged the liner right before it hit the ground and both runners were out of position. Scanio threw to first for the second out and Walton fired to Mejia at second to complete the 1-3-6 triple play, the first for the Chiefs in just over two years.

Peoria again put the leadoff runner in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings but failed to take the lead. Quad Cities broke through in the bottom of the sixth against Scanio. Brian Blasik doubled and moved to third on a sac bunt. Ovando's fly ball to center was deep enough to score Blasik for a 2-1 Bandits lead.

The Chiefs were down to their final strike in the top of the seventh when Wilson fouled off two full-count pitches and launched a game-tying home run into the left-field berm. The blast, his MWL leading eighth of the season, was the third Wilson has hit this season in the Chiefs final at-bat.

Quad Cities won the game in the bottom of the seventh with an unearned run. Michael Aldrete took over on the mound and with one out pinch-hitter Jordan Scott reached on an error by Walton at first base. He stole second and with two outs the Chiefs intentionally walked Miles Hamblin. Joyce won the game with a walk-off single to left field.

Garcia allowed one run on two hits and one walk over three innings in his Chiefs debut. The right-hander struck out four in a no-decision. Llorens allowed a hit and a walk to two batters faced. Scanio allowed one run on two hits over three innings while striking out two. Aldrete (1-2) allowed one unearned run on one hit and one intentional walk while striking out two in 2/3 of an inning.
