Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, WI - Adam Brett Walker homered twice, drove in seven and scored four times to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 23-16 rout of the Beloit Snappers in Midwest League action on Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 784.

The Snappers now have a record of 19-15 this season. Cedar Rapids moves to 24-10.

On this wild day, every player in both lineups got at least one hit. Every starting position player on both teams scored a run and every player for the Kernels drove in a run.

Things began badly for Beloit starter Seth Streich (3-2). In the top of the first, consecutive singles and an error loaded the bases with nobody out. A walk forced in one run and Walker (4-6, 2 HR, 7 RBIs, 4 runs) ripped a double into left for two more. After a groundout scored run number four, Tyler Grimes hit a two-run homer, his first of the year, and the lead went up to 6-0.

Run-scoring singles by Ryan Mathews and Brett Vertigan in the second brought Beloit to within 6-2, but the Kernels responded in the third, blowing the game wide open with eight runs. Walker began the inning with a double, which was followed by a pair of free passes. A single and a walk then each accounted for a run and Byron Buxton (4-7, 4 RBIs, 4 runs) smacked a two-run double down the left field line, making the score 10-2. After an RBI single and a sacrifice fly tacked on two more, Walker capped the inning by blasting a two-run homer to dead center and putting Cedar Rapids ahead 14-2.

John Wooten's RBI single got Beloit a run in the third and Cedar Rapids added three in the fourth, one on J.D. Williams' single and two on Buxton's triple. Walker's second homer of the game and ninth of the year was a three-run shot in a five-run sixth that pushed the lead to 22-3.

Despite trailing, the Snappers refused to go quietly and scored six times in their half of the sixth. Chris Bostick and Daniel Robertson picked up RBIs with singles and two-run doubles by Renato Nunez (3-5, HR, 3 RBIs, 4 runs) and Matt Olson made the score 22-9.

In the top of the ninth, infielder Sam Roberts was called on to pitch for Beloit. In that inning, Cedar Rapids scored on a sacrifice fly by Williams.

Alex Muren (1-1) was credited with the win for pitching two and a third innings. Muren allowed only one run and it came on Renato Nunez's eighth home run of the year in the eighth. Josh Burris was called on to pitch the ninth, but had a lot of trouble closing it out. After getting the first two men out, Bostick doubled, Robertson tripled and scored on a wild pitch. From there two walks and an infield single loaded the bases for John Wooten (4-5, HR, 5 RBI, 2 runs), who took Burris deep and gone to right-center for a grand slam, his sixth homer this season. Burris finally got the last out when Nick Rickles flied out to center.

After splitting the first two games, Cedar Rapids and Beloit will square off in the rubber match of this series on Monday evening with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30pm. Handling the pitching chore for the Snappers will be RHP Vince Voiro (1-1, 4.35 ERA), while LHP Matt Tomshaw does the same for the Kernels (2-0, 5.63 ERA). Every Monday at Pohlman Field is Monster Deal Monday, sponsored by WJVL and WCLO.
