Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Dayton, OH - In a dominant offensive performance from start to finish, the Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field with a 13-7 win. The TinCaps have now won five straight, doing so for the first time since July 28th-August 1st, 2012.
The Fort Wayne offense was dormant through the first two innings, as the TinCaps (21-13) were retired in order in both frames. The first blow came from Rodney Daal, who hit a two-run home run, giving the TinCaps the first two runs of the game. That was a harbinger of the day to come for the catcher, who finished the afternoon 4-for-4, with two home runs, a double, and four runs batted in.
By the time the fourth inning was over the Fort Wayne lead was already 10-0, after a four-run third inning and a six-run fourth inning. Other offensive standouts in the win included Jeremy Baltz and Luis Tejada, who each drove in three runs, and Alberth Martinez, who knocked in two.
Ruben Mejia (2-3) picked up his first win in three attempts as a starting pitcher this season, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up one run. Although he walked four batters, he fanned four, too, and allowed four hits. His outing marks the 10th straight game where a TinCaps starter has gone at least five innings. In nine of those outings, the starting pitcher has allowed two earned runs or fewer.
Dayton (12-23) starting pitcher Sal Romano (3-3) was handed the loss, after leaving the game with one out in the fourth. He was responsible for eight runs, only two of those earned, along with two walks and two strikeouts.
The finale of the three-game series, and a chance for a second consecutive sweep for the TinCaps, is scheduled for Monday night at 7:00 p.m. The scheduled starting pitching matchup features two first-round draft picks. Walker Weickel, a 2012 supplemental first-rounder for San Diego, is set to pitch for Fort Wayne and Robert Stephenson, the 27th overall selection in the 2011 draft by Cincinnati, is the scheduled starter for Dayton. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
