LumberKings Swept by Dayton with a 17-7 Loss in the Finale
June 5, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Following a four game sweep at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids vs. the top ranked pitching staff in the Midwest League, the Clinton LumberKings (23-32) met the third ranked pitching staff in the Dayton Dragons (30-25) and had the same result, albeit at their home ballpark. The Dragons pounced on Lukas Schiraldi (L, 4-4) for eight earned runs over 3.2 innings, as the newly named All-Star had his toughest outing of the season.
Dayton struck in the first inning for the second time in the series, as Brian O'Grady hit a two-run home run to right field. Dayton scored two runs in each of the first two innings, and in three of the first four. Ronald Bueno plated two runs with a two-out double in the second inning, while a run scored on a groundout in the third.
Kristian Brito got Clinton on the scoreboard and made it 4-1 with a leadoff solo home run in the second inning. That was all the LumberKings got against Junior Morillo (W, 1-0), as he was brilliant in his season debut. The lefty allowed just three hits and one earned run over five innings. Morillo struck out five and did not walk a batter. The three Dayton starting pitchers in the series allowed just two earned runs over 17 innings, a 1.06 ERA.
The Dragons, who entered the series 13th in the league in scoring, plated eight runs in the opener, four on Thursday night, and 17 in the series finale.
A five run fourth inning broke the game open, as neither Schiraldi nor Hawtin Buchanan could slow down the Dayton offense. The Dragons had five hits in the frame, which included a two-out two-RBI double by Gavin LaValley, followed by an RBI single by Paul Kronenfeld. Buchanan was charged with a pair of earned runs over two innings out of the Clinton bullpen.
Clinton responded with a five-run sixth inning and cut the deficit to four. Chantz Mack drove home a run with an RBI double and scored on Kristian Brito's RBI single, while two runs scored on an error on Dayton shortstop Luis Gonzalez.
The Dragons then brought the comeback to a halt, as Dayton scored seven runs over the final three innings, two off of Peter Miller and five vs. Troy Scott. Gonzalez had a two-RBI double in the seventh and a three-RBI double in the eighth.
Chantz Mack recorded three hits for Clinton, while Gavin LaValley went 3-6 for Dayton. Jonathan Reynoso, the ninth man in the Dayton order, finished with a game high four hits and four runs scored.
With seven straight losses and two consecutive sweeps in the rear view mirror, Clinton will turn its attention to the Bowling Green Hot Rods (30-25) who enter the series tied for the wild card lead with the Dragons. Zack Littell (1-0, 2.11) will get the start for Clinton, while Greg Harris (2-4, 2.51) will start the opener for the Hot Rods. First pitch at Ashford University Field is set for 6:30. The LumberKings broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
