Chiefs Walked Off and Swept in Great Lakes

Midland, MI- The Peoria Chiefs scored two runs early but couldn't find a third run late and lost to the Great Lakes Loons 3-2 on a walk-off double Friday night. The loss gives the Loons a sweep of the series and sends the Chiefs to 26-29, a season-worst three games under .500.

The Chiefs got things going early as Darren Seferina singled on Tyler Oaks' first pitch of the game. Seferina stole second and scored as Oscar Mercado singled to left for a 1-0 lead. Mercado moved to second on a ground out but was left in scoring position.

Great Lakes tied the game in the bottom of the first against All-Star Austin Gomber. With two down Alex Santana walked and scored on a double by Josmer Cordero.

The Chiefs regained the lead in the second inning. Adam Ehrlich singled to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Magneuris Sierra. Luis Cruz singled to center and Ehrlich scored on a fielders' choice grounder off the bat of Andrew Sohn for a 2-1 lead.

The Loons tied the game in the fifth. Faustino Oguisten drew a lead-off walk and Kelvin Ramos singled to put runners on the corners. Johan Mieses delivered a sacrifice fly to center for a 2-2 score before Gomber escaped the inning.

Peoria had chances in each of the final five innings but left a runner in scoring position each time. In the eighth Mercado led off with a single against reliever Karch Kowalczyk. Mercado moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third with one out. However a strikeout of Nick Thompson and a groundout by Vaughn Bryan ended the inning.

In the ninth Ehrlich led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Sierra. Kowalczyk struck out Cruz and Sohn grounded out to end the inning. The Loons won the game in three batters in the bottom of the ninth. Ramos walked against reliever Kyle Grana and Mieses singled to center. Michael Ahmed failed to get a bunt down on the first two strikes but lifted a double to the wall in right-center field to win the game 3-2 as Ramos scored without a throw.

Gomber allowed two runs on four hits while pitching into the sixth inning in a no-decision. He walked four and struck out four in his five innings of work. Jhonny Polanco allowed two hits and struck out one in two shutout innings. Tyler Bray allowed two hits and struck out one in one shutout innings. Grana (1-1) allowed one run on two hits and one walk while not recording an out.

Notes: The Chiefs had not been three games under .500 since finishing the 2012 season as a Cubs affiliate at 63-75...The last time the Chiefs were three games under .500 or worse as a Cardinals affiliate was September 1, 2003...Peoria was 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position Friday and 5-for-34 (.147) in the series...Diekroeger's 10-game hit streak ended as the third baseman went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt...He had 18 hits during the hit streak...The Chiefs have scored four runs or less in 41 of 55 games this season...Gomber tied a career-high with four walks...Mercado stole his team-leading 23rd base, his first steal since May 16...Peoria stole four bases on the night...Ehrlich had his first multi-hit game of the season...Grana had not allowed a run in 28 straight regular season appearance between August 1, 2014 and May 31...He has now allowed a run in two straight outings...Grana is tied with Robby Rowland for the team lead in games pitched at 19...Gomber is tied with Luis Perdomo for the team lead in strikeouts with 56...The Chiefs have been swept three times this season in three-game series with two coming on the road...The Chiefs are 15-36 on the road against the Eastern Division since the start of the 2011 season...Peoria is 9-10 all time at Dow Diamond which opened in 2007...The Chiefs now travel to Lansing, Michigan for a three-game series with the first-place Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays)...The series begins at 6:05 p.m. Saturday as the Chiefs send RH Jack Flaherty (0-1, 2.57) to the mound against Lansing RH Chase de Jong (4-4, 3.84)...The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 5:50 p.m., on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android...The broadcast is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network in the MiLB Inside the Park and Tune-In Radio Apps.
