Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - Bust those brooms out. The Great Lakes Loons have claimed another improbable series sweep, and have done so in dramatic fashion.

Infielder Michael Ahmed's walk-off single to the right centerfield gap powered the Loons to a 3-2 victory over the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night at Dow Diamond. The Loons (28-26) have won three consecutive games and eight of their last nine.

"This team, I'll tell you, has a lot of character and you saw that tonight," said Loons manager Luis Matos. "These types of wins give you a lot of confidence. If we can keep playing this way it will be very good for us."

Ahmed worked a seven-pitch at bat before his eventual game-winning base knock.

"I was just trying to make contact," he said. "These last couple of wins have been real team wins. It's really good to see it all come together."

Loons reliever Karch Kowalczyk (3-1) entered the game in the top of the 8th inning and used a commanding fastball to earn the win. Peoria reliever Kyle Grana (1-1) gave up Ahmed's hit and took the loss.

The Loons tied the game for the second time during the bottom of the 5th inning when Faustino Oguisten worked a walk and then advanced to third base on a base hit by fellow infielder Kelvin Ramos. Centerfielder Johan Mieses plated Oguisten with a sacrifice groundout, which tied the game at 2-2.

Peoria (26-29) designated hitter Oscar Mercado put the Chiefs on the scoreboard up 1-0 with a base hit off the glove of Loons shortstop Faustino Oguisten during the bottom of the 1st inning.

Right fielder Alex Santana worked a two-out walk to keep the bottom of the 1st alive for Great Lakes, and first baseman Josmar Cordero doubled him home to tie the game at a run a piece.

The Chiefs kept the offensive pressure on in the bottom of the 2nd inning, using back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with one out. Oaks surrendered an RBI sacrifice groundout to Peoria shortstop Andrew Sohn, who gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.

The Loons open a new three game series against the Burlington Bees on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Victor Gonzalez (0-5, 5.10 ERA) will get the start for the Loons and the Bees send righty Michael Bolaski (3-4 4.71 ERA) to the mound. Following the game, fans can enjoy an exciting Fireworks Loontacular powered by Dow Corning.

The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
