LumberKings Offense Goes Cold, then Heats up in DH Split

July 7, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Davenport, IA - There was very little offense to speak of in the first half of the doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park Tuesday evening, as the Clinton LumberKings (4-9, 30-52) were shut out 1-0 by the Quad Cities River Bandits (8-5, 53-28). In game two however, Clinton scored in each of the first four innings and ran away with a 6-1 victory.

In just his second start of the season, David Paulino (W, 1-1) dazzled over six shutout innings. Just one frame featured multiple Clinton base runners, and it came with two outs in the first inning. Taylor Zeutenhorst flew out to center field in Clinton's only real scoring opportunity of the game.

The LumberKings got five hits in game one, all singles, three of which did not leave the infield, and had only two runners reach scoring position, neither got to third base. Paulino retired the final eight and 10 of the last 11 that he faced in route to the win.

Tyler Herb (L, 4-5) went just 2.2 innings for the second straight start vs. Quad Cities. The righty allowed just one hit, a two-out RBI single to Bobby Boyd in the third inning. Osmer Morales stranded the bases loaded in the frame, but one run was enough to get Quad Cities the win.

In a 1-0 game entering the seventh and final inning, Ryan Thompson (SV, 3) retired all three men that he faced and closed out the River Bandits' win.

Game two got off to a much better start for Clinton. Justin Ferrell (L, 1-2) allowed runs in all three innings that he pitched. Ferrell surrendered a two-out two-RBI single to Estarlyn Morales in the first inning, the 18th and 19th runs the outfielder has driven in with two outs in 2015. That was enough for the Clinton pitching staff, as Jarrett Brown and Kody Kerski (W, 2-2) held the Quad Cities offense to just one hit.

Brown was nearly flawless over four innings. The lefty allowed just one hit and walked only one in his second shutout start in as many opportunities this season. He faced just two over the minimum over his outing but did not factor in the decision.

The LumberKings added on runs in the second, the third, and the fourth. Austin Cousino hit his first double and picked up his first RBI of the season in the second inning, while Arby Fields, Joe DeCarlo, and Chris Mariscal each tallied an RBI over the stretch.

Clinton led 6-0 after four innings, the pitching staff allowed just one unearned run in the game, and did not allow a hit after a leadoff single by Nick Tanielu in the first inning. Kerski retired the final eight that he faced in the win.

The Clinton win in game two snapped a seven game losing streak and was the club's first win in five tries at Modern Woodmen Park in 2015. Chantz Mack had his season high eight game hit streak snapped in game one of the doubleheader, while Mariscal had two hits in each game. Estarlyn Morales had three hits in the second half of the doubleheader, his second three-hit game of the season.

Off of the split, the same two teams will head to Ashford University Field and begin a two game series Wednesday night. The opener will see Pat Peterson (4-4, 4.66) and Joshua James (2-1, 2.70) throw for Clinton and Quad Cities. James has made two relief appearances vs. the LumberKings while Peterson has made three starts vs. the River Bandits. First pitch in Clinton is set for 6:30 CT. The LumberKings broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
