Rattlers win third straight with a walkoff in extra innings

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers ended the ten-game winning streak of the Kane County Cougars with a 5-4 win in eleven innings at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Alan Sharkey homered, drove in three runs and scored on the game-winning infield single by Tucker Neuhaus to give the Rattlers their third straight win.
Kane County (46-34 overall, 10-2 second half) took the lead in the top of the third inning. Victor Reyes doubled to start the frame. Chuck Taylor doubled off the wall in left with one out to drive in Reyes for a 1-0 lead.
Wisconsin (28-54, 5-7) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Sthervin Matos lined a solo homer of the wall in center with two outs and evened the game 1-1. Greg McCall followed with a single and Tucker Neuhaus doubled to put runners on second and third, but Nick Baker got a strikeout to end the Rattlers rally.
The Cougars would go back in front in the top of the sixth. Rattlers starting pitcher Zach Hirsch hit Cody Regis to start the inning. Regis moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a sharp single to left by Michael Perez. Wisconsin would go to the bullpen and call Zach Cooper in to face Joe Munoz.
Cooper got Munoz to send a grounder in the hole at short, but the ball was misplayed. Regis scored on the play and Perez took third. Pinch-hitter Henry Bonilla was at the plate when Munoz took off for second and drew a throw. Perez broke for the plate and beat the return throw to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead.
Kane County went up 4-1 when another grounder to short was misplayed to let Munoz score.
Khris Davis, playing in his final game on a rehabilitation assignment from the Milwaukee Brewers, drew a walk from reliever Cody Geyer in a sudden rainstorm with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game was halted after Davis reached first base to allow the tarp to be placed on the field. The delay lasted for 28 minutes.
When the game resumed, Geyer lost the strike zone. Dustin DeMuth walked on four pitches. Elvis Rubio drew a walk to load the bases. Sharkey walked on a 3-1 pitch from Geyer to force in pinch-runner Gregory Munoz, who took over for Davis on the base paths after the delay.
Sharkey brought the Rattlers back to even in the bottom of the eighth inning against Jose Martinez. Rubio drew a walk with one out and Sharkey had a 3-1 count again. The Rattlers first baseman lined this 3-1 pitch down the line in right and the ball stayed fair as it cleared the wall for a game-tying, two run home run. The homer, Sharkey's second of the season, was his first at home.
Kodi Medeiros, who came on in relief in the top of the eighth inning, kept the Cougars off the scoreboard, allowed one hit, and struck out three over three innings.
Luke Curtis tossed a 1-2-3 top of the eleventh and the Rattlers offense went to work in the bottom of the inning. Once again, it was Sharkey in the thick of the action.
Sharkey drew a leadoff walk against Luis Ramirez. Sthervin Matos reached on an infield single and Greg McCall walked to load the bases.
Tucker Neuhaus was next and he sent a slow roller up the first base line. Ramirez fielded the ball near the line and made a back-handed flip to the plate. The ball popped away from Perez at the plate and Sharkey scored the winning run to give Wisconsin its first walkoff win of the season.
The teams wrap up Fox Cities portion of their series on Tuesday afternoon. Devin Williams (2-4, 2.92) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has pushed Wei-Chieh Huang (3-1, 1.51) back from Monday to Tuesday. Game time is 12:05pm.
