CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Cedar Rapids fell to the Beloit Snappers, 8-1, in the home stand finale. The Kernels managed just six hits on Tuesday afternoon.
Tanner English and Brett Doe led the Kernels offense with two hits each. English went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI while Doe finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
Beloit took (32-51, 6-7) an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first. Trent Gilbert recorded the first hit of the afternoon with a one-out single to center. Yairo Munoz followed Gilbert with a walk, advancing Gilbert to second. Sandber Pimentel then singled to center, loading the bases full of Snappers. A Luke Westphal balk with the bases loaded scored Gilbert from third, putting Beloit in front of Cedar Rapids, 1-0. The balk by Westphal also advanced Munoz to third and Pimentel to second. Two batters later, Jose Brizuela extended the Beloit lead to three with a two-out, two-run single to center, plating both Munoz and Pimentel.
Cedar Rapids (49-34, 8-5) cut the Beloit lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Jorge Fernandez led off the inning with a single through the right side. Two batters later, Fernandez swiped second with his first stolen base of the year. Tanner English cut the Snappers lead to two with a two-out RBI double down the right field line, scoring Fernandez from second.
Beloit came back in the top of the sixth with two runs, going in front of the Kernels, 5-1. Back-to-back singles by Munoz and Pimentel gave the Snappers runners on first and second to begin the inning. Joe Bennie then drew a walk, loading the bases for Beloit. A bases loaded walk issued by Daniel Bard to Brizuela brought in Munoz from third. Two batters later, Max Kuhn put the Snappers up 5-1 with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Pimentel from third.
The Snappers tacked on three runs in the top of the ninth to go in front of the Kernels, 8-1. A leadoff walk to Akau followed by a single by Kuhn to left gave Beloit runners on first and second to begin the frame. Raga then reached on a walk, loading the bases full of Snappers. James Harris put Beloit up by five with an RBI single to left, plating Akau from third. Two batters later, Munoz brought in Kuhn from third with an RBI fielder's choice. A Kernels fielding error on the play also allowed Raga to score from second.
Westphal (1-1) suffered the loss in his second start for Cedar Rapids, The southpaw allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven in four innings. Bard allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out a pair in two innings. Booser allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks while striking out four in three innings of relief.
Brett Graves (7-3) recorded the win for Beloit. The right-hander yielded one run on six hits and one walk while striking out three in 5 2/3 innings pitched.
Carlos Navas (5) earned a hold with 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. The right-hander retired all seven hitters he faced, three via the strikeout. Koby Gauna secured the win for Beloit with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
The Kernels continue the four-game series with the final two games in Beloit v. the Snappers, the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. First pitch on Wednesday from Pohlman Field is at 7:00 p.m. RHP Felix Jorge (3-3, 2.20) gets the start for the Kernels while RHP Joey Wagman (3-2, 2.87) counters for the Snappers.
The Kernels return home for a three-game homestand on Wednesday, July 15th, v. the Burlington Bees. Wednesday's game is a Free Money Wednesday presented by Western Fraternal Life. Western Fraternal Life will give away $500 at the main gates at every Wednesday home game with $100 as the top cash prize. Wednesday's game is also Hall of Fame Night. The Kernels welcome the Cedar Rapids Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2015 and will recognize them before the game, along with members of past Cedar Rapids teams
